Woke up this morning to the smell of smoke..went downstairs and discovered the stove was out, and had burned back into the hopper a bit.
Took the augers out ..cleaned everything up, tested the motors and everything turned freely. I sanded all the edges of the augers to assure a smooth ride in the tube. Lubed everything up, new gaskets and fired it back up.
Flame was good, augers were working as they should. I let it burn about 15 minutes, went upstairs for dinner and noticed a puff of smoke out the window, went back down and the same thing had happened. Both augers had stopped moving and the bottom feed auger had started to burn back. I quickly emptied the stove and closed the lid back up to stop the draft and let it burn out. the fire did not make it back to the hopper this time but was on its way.

I clean the stove weekly and have never had a problem in 3 years. All new gaskets , burn pot, door, lid, blowers etc...at the beginning of the season. The stove runs 24/7 except for cleaning.

Any ideas?

thanks

Where's the Englander tech guy I forget his name very helpful some one will hook you up with him .

You put all new parts in it this year? But what have you cleaned?

The exchange/exhaust area on the PDV is quite complicated and needs a good, long brush and a leaf blower. To best clean it.

Is the hopper gasket good? Latches sealing tight? For it to burn back, means there is air in the hopper?

Buy a Harman:cool:
What good would that do? He's already got a bottom feeder. Buy a Quad!

Maybe a blocked OAK ? Or a sticking oak flapper. The fire is looking for extra oxygen and the hopper is supplying it. Is the high limit/overheat sensor working ?

Replies like the above only serve to tell everyone exactly who you are

Did u happen to read the first reply to my post ...asking for help. Tells u who I am ?

I subscribe to this forum to gain knowledge and maybe get help when I need it and right from the jump I get an A$$hole...smartass response. I owned a Harman. didnt like it, maybe a lemon, not sure so I sold it.

As for new lid gaskets, yes I replaced them and no I havent checked the high limit and I will check the OAK tonite. Like I said, stove fired up as normal...got to temp kicked on the convection blower then with in about 10 -15 minutes it stopped and started to burn back.

When I did my pre season cleaning I took off the combustion blower...brushed it out, banged the inside with a rubber mallet and used a small tube attachment with my vac to get the nooks and crannies, removed the firepot etc...

Why would a faulty high limit cause it to burn back?

Again, thanks to those who try to help

I guess I will give it the mother of all cleanings tonite ...rip it back apart, clean the augers and try it again. At least its easy to work on.

If the bottom auger motor is weak and stops moving ...could that cause it to burn back?

Just spoke with the tech @ Englander who is a member...heck of a nice guy . Hopefully this problem will be solved.

Thanks again

hopper fires happen in Englanders when one of two things happen, 1st make sure nobody ever takes unburned pellets from the burn pot area and tosses them back into the hopper after a failed ignition. I know, I know...but it happens. 2nd, if the lower auger motor quits during a steady burn AND the hopper seal isn't completely sealed, the fire can creep back into the double augers and into the hopper. Usually if it is a total burn back, you will need new lower auger motor and new pivot bearings and seals for both augers

spoke to the Op just now, looks like bottom auger motor quitting , along with some leakage somewhere in the feed system, hopper gasket just replaced so leakage will be in the feed system or the hopper itself. suspect will be a relatively easy fix as it was not a major smokeback, discussed "smoking" the hopper with a lit napkin to locate the leaks then clear the stove and tighten the leaks up
