I've been doing reading here about various brands of pellets and see often one type of pellet is bagged under different names.

Is there a list or link that you could share?

Does this change from year to year?

Search this site using the term 'rebagged' - I came up with a lot of threads that list which pellets are renamed/rebagged for different retailers.

Just double checked, you can also go into the Sticky Link permanent thread at the top of this forum page. Scroll down and there is a link to rebagged/rebranded pellets.

Here is the thread that we all posted what we could find. Make sure to read the whole thing as we can't update the original posts since the new forum started. All we can do is add new posts to it now.

Some brands like the CleanFire hardwoods can be multiple brands like NEWP or Hassle and Hughes during the season. But for the most part they are pretty consistent.

Cleanfires are New England Wood Pellets?
that is what is said but my stove likes the cleanfires and gives nice heat
hates the New England and I don't get any heat from them

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

As a newbie trying to decide if we should pre buy and which pellets. We have a new to us FS Empress and have a Harman Accentra insert that is awaiting final installation after we have a smaller chimney repair done.

Looking at Pellets Direct Softwoods

Spruce Pointe Super Premium; 269/ton if buy 3
LG Granules Softwood $269/ton if buy 3
Curran Optimal Super Premium Softwood $259/ton if buy 3; recommend for shoulder pellet with American Wood Fibers
American Wood Fibers (ultra premium softwood pellet) $279/ton if buy 3; they recommended this for high heat and low ash anchor

Or Wood Pellets
Granules LG for $263 or Cleanfire Pacifics for $273/ton; both 3 ton+ pricing

Of course there is the debate hard or softwood; wait and see what BB stores have and how our stoves run.

Thinking cleaner pellets are better for us as we learn more.

Pellets direct sells by the bag. If you are close enough to Uxbridge, it would be worth the time & effort to go down and pick up a couple of bags of each of those brands and give them a test burn. Nothing more nagging then making a 3 ton commitment and constantly wondering if you went with the wrong brand. Since the early buy pricing expired on Mar 31, I'd guess the prices are going to be stable for a bit.

You may want to at least list your general area if not your town/state so people can give you suggestions/advice specific to your area.

You may also want to only get your cold/middle winter stash now (high heat, low ash) and wait for the big boxes to have sales late summer and order your shoulder pellets stash. I'm sure their prices are going to be lower than what you have listed and they don't have a minimum to buy to get that pricing, it's the same whether you take 1 ton or 4 and they have a flat delivery fee.

We live in Bristol County in MA.

Does testing a few bags of winter/high heat pellets now when it is much warmer still work?

Tough to tell since you won't be cranking it up, but you will be able to tell the amount of ash. What did you use during this winter? If you liked that then you might want to stick with that (order enough for mid-winter) and test some of the other super premium brands next winter (4-5 bags each) to help you plan for next Spring. The MA boys will be able to help you find dealers in your area to give you some options in who and what you order.

We just got the stoves this month so we do not have any experience.

See if you can buy a few bags of 1-2 of the super premium brands and fire it up to see how each works (try one brand for a couple of days). You might be a bit warm, but you'll get to see how your stove handles (likes) each one. If you look in the 'Sticky Links' section there is a thread up there with recommendations from some very seasoned veterans here which you shouldn't go wrong with. Best of luck!

I was told that a few years ago by the sales person at WoodPellets.com. The hardwood version.

I was just told by WoodPellets.com that this is not true. CleanFires are an independent label.

They do not have their own mill or even a means to bag them. We have had a member visit the NEWP plant and they saw them bagging the CleanFire brand. Also there is this video which clearly shows the CleanFire pellets being bagged by another mill. Forward to around 2:42 to see them bagging the pellets.

Take what they told you with a grain of salt!
