Shag bark Hickory on the ground, worth getting, take a look

Couldn't pass that up, better than white oak & locust

I though so but wanted more experienced opinions.
It's not big but it's BTU's and I am pulling wood out at the front of this property, might as well get all thats there ,the ash leaner to

Get it fast. Hickory is great but won't last long on the ground.
It gets punky, and absorbs water.

I would lay a saw into it. Grab it up if you still have a solid core.
I agree with PaulyW - for being a solid, high BTU firewood...once it hits the ground it is short lived. I have seen white oak and even some smaller elms that all but get petrified - but the hickory will go to dust.

Never pass up hickory. I'm lucky to get some of it and love the smell when burning. And definitely save some for smoking meat or adding chips to your grill. Simply great stuff.

Dont delay,it goes to compost fast,especially in low/wet areas.Grab all you can.

Like Jags said cut it open and see what it is like inside-it still looks good but pictures can be deceiving. Even if it is starting to go bad perhaps you can dry it out and still get some output from it.
