That's how we do it. He gets half of the wood from the job, I get half. We both work like bandits, we were raised up that way. My best friend (more like a brother), who I cut wood with on the side, called me up Thursday and says he's got an 'emergency' job for a guy. Says there is a "V" shaped tree ,he's sure it's oak, one side is dead, the other is live. One side has a lean in one direction, the other side is leaning opposite. He tells me "these are straight drops, no problem. Only around 60' trees, and in-and-out job...."

Well, a lot of my good buds on this site KNOW that I just plain AIN'T ALLOWED TO CUT TIL THE LIVING ROOM IS FINISHED PER MRS. OVERKILL'S DIRECT ORDERS.....

But, he tells me " we can't let this one pass us up. Enough wood for two months for the both of us on that tree...."

Well, I got in trouble (for a few hours anyway), and took on the job. In the meantime, another guy who we've cut for before calls me and tells me a huge branch is dangling out of a tree against his house, and it's directly over a parking lot at a bank that borders his property. Both jobs within a mile or so of each other in a neighboring town. I figure we'd do that one too.....in-and-out, right?

We were on the road to the job at 5:45AM....I like to do my tree-killing before breakfast....::-)

Here's a couple shots of the oak. Turns out that double tree was a red oak, actually around 80-90', one side was dead and barkless, with very little sapwood remaining. The other side was live, very few branches, lots and lots of good wood. I wedged and dropped both sides (cabled the one for insurance), but both fell right where we wanted them to, with a little 'English' and a pair of wedges...

ended up losing a bucking spike bolt early in the game in my 372XP, which wiped out several cutters on the chain. So I broke out the 041Super, and let it chew for a while....

Both trunks were down, topped, bucked and loaded in our trailers and trucks by 8:30AM, I had to be home to go to my youngest sons' church membership confirmation at 10:00AM. Very proud of that boy! I ended up with a heaping truckload, my buddy got a trailerfull of it as well.

Anyway, after that, went back up and stumped the base of the tree. I haven't ran the ported 051AV yet this year, and had yet to try out that vintage 42" roller tip bar/.404-.63 combo yet, so I figured WHAT THE HECK.....threw it in the truck and off we went to finish the clean-up...second load was a almost heaping load.....ash, a little sassafras (small tree that was off to the side of the oak) and some ash from the final job of the day..

I love those big saws......

2013-05-19_13-52-21_312.jpg 2013-05-19_13-56-20_20.jpg

Cut the stumps both off as far down as I could (heck, there's almost a week's worth of firewood in those two bases!). They were so friggin heavy I decided to noodle them......I mean, when you have a 4' bar and a saw that can run it, why the heck not??>>

Big pile o' noodles there....

more pics on the next post....ran out of room......

Didn't get any pics of the clean up on the ash branch at the other jobsite, was trying to get it done in a timely manner. To put it into perspective, it's approx. 40' off the ground and was dangling literally by a sliver of wood.....another neighboring branch was damaged from the bigger one....
Took two big branches off of that tree, filled the trailer with branches, and homeward bound we go....
Put all the big rounds around the Scotz-hausen, loaded the smaller stuff on top of it....Starting to get quite the pile of wood out back! I figure I got close to a cord, maybe a little more, today....

Yeah, I'm bushed.....but, DAYUM I love running them saws!!
That oak is some heavy chit, I'm looking forward to burning the white & red oak I scrounged last fall. If I get done what I have planned for this week, I'll be milling some cherry in June.

Good days work.
Pretty wood.
When will you have time to get it split?

Joful, when I get a chance I will do that. I'll be touching up the chain this week, I'll take some pics.

Bogy, I'm hoping to get on the splitting in the middle of June. This wood will be put up for 15/16......lots of time for it to season!

Is that all?
I still have some popcorn left.:p
Ok, all kidding aside, quite a nice haul.
I thought the floor was done? What else are you doing in there?
Thanks, PD. Floor is almost done. Its installed, but I have to run the sander on it to take some of the planer marks off of the wood, and then put the finish on it. Only thing left to do then is finish installing the trim (all white oak) and ceiling fans. Then, we're in business!

Great score....you and your bud have a good system going. I can tell you, that there is no way on this earth my Wife would have let me out of doing a house project to get wood.....she might let me help out my buddy cutting it, but I would not be able to bring any home....

Nice work Scotty........ and done in a timely and proficient manner

Thanks brother.....this was the first time in a long time that we did such a big tree with little to no real "hitch".

Indeed! Awesome score Scotty! In a few years when you are sitting in that completed room of yours enjoying the heat from this oak, you won't even remember the lashings... ;lol It'll be worth it.

Ya, when you first see those big saws and especially the 48" bars it opens your eyes. Then the first time you run one, it's like, "Wow!" Then after a while you are happier to watch someone else run that saw. ;)

That is very true! Don't get me wrong, I'm still strong enough (my back, my body, and my will) to run it, but after a few slings of it, yes, she gets a tad heavy!!

Running a big timber saw like that really puts how hard those guys worked back in the old days into perspective.....back in the day, you had to be one tough SOB to be involved in the timber industry.....

And many times you still have to be pretty tough to be in the business although a lot of the hard labor has been done away with. Still can be pretty demanding work.

Yes it can. Heck, even doing the 'weekend' tree removal thing......it's tough work. We earn every penny we get, and if I didn't love doing the work so much, I'd NEVER do it.....

Just too hard to do, if you ain't enjoying it to some extent.....
