Mount Cheaha Alabama
Over 10" during the night. Got up and found my neighbors truck in my driveway - his yard is the first pic.
Managed to salvage his truck and got out in his RV, his old 68 Bronco is covered over the hood, shed is gone with new lawnmower and ATV. The folks next door lost a small car and truck.

Wow!!!!

10" of rain overnight? And I think that much rain here in a month is a lot... that is also about what San Diego gets in a year!

The news has not caught up with this event yet... most of the weather news is about the big twister in OK City.

Dang...stay safe.

holy crap!

We had the same thing happen back in 2008. This is from the NOAA site for central IN:

"had a 24-hour rainfall event between June 6 and 7 with an exceedance probability one might expect to see once every 100 years. Although the greatest official 24-hour total occurred 3 miles east of Center Point, IN with 9.5 inches (241 mm), an unofficial report in Edinburgh, IN indicated that 10.71 inches (272 mm) fell on June 7th, which one might expect to see less frequently than once every 1000 years. "

This was one of those localized events. A line of training/trailing thunderstorms from about 9pm - 7am. All cells had the purple color - one dropping 5.6"/hr.
We're at the foot of the mountain the small creek that would normally be running ~50yds behind the satellite dish in first pic is back down to it's normal 5-6" level.
This is all a known flood plain - That's why I bought at the top of a hill

Been helping my neighbor with campers clean up the past few days - his shed floated and turned around laying over a fence and laid on a utility trailer got that turned around and the lawnmower fired right up. Old Bronco should be no worse for the wear - fluid and diesel flush, his quad is running fine after a good flushing.
We pitchforked out ~30 wheelbarrow loads of debris from his carport hangout and found ~1/2 of his outdoor firewood any lost will be replenished with copious driftwood piles;)

The only rain gauge I use is my pool.
I decided to not fill it after opening it a few days prior to this.
It was 2" below the skimmer basket(8") and another 3" of liner above that - water was running over the deck boards by daylight.

Unreal! The more I see flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes the more I appreciate being here.. We do get hurricanes and blizzards but you can prepare better for those disasters than floods, earthquakes and tornadoes..

Yeah after the water had receded here and we heard about the Tornadoes in OK on Monday kind of put's things in perspective.
"Stuff" can be replaced/repaired - lost loved ones can not.
Pushed my plans for a storm shelter back up the list

Curious what you can do about flooding.. Tornadoes you build underground what do you do to protect against floods?

Live on high ground?:)
I'm ~70' of elevation above this creek bottom
There are above ground storm shelters/safe rooms that can be built into new structures.
Right now my plan is a central bathroom - not going to be much good in anything over EF-3
