Got this trailer for FREE! It's 12' x 6' w/15" tires, looking for opinions as for decking that can handle rounds and put ( 2) ATV on. The rotted plywood was removed before taking the frame home.

Title info is homemade trailer at 3000lb but i bet it can handle more( In IL 3k or less $18 a year to plate/tag). Its axle has torsion springs, I have no idea as to it carrying capacity, looks beefy. The fenders say Shoreline so it maybe a converted boat trailer. Anyone got info as to carrying capacity?

I have a set of LT tires that will fit the rims. There rated at 2500# max each

IMO I would probably use 5/4 x6 pressure treated decking. If it was heavier duty I would use 2x6 pt. I would definetely take the opportunity to get some por 15 paint and paint the rusted areas before putting on the deck. Just wire brush the rust, use the spray cleaner, paint with por 15 then coat with rattle can paint to block uv rays.

Sweet!
Good price. Should work well ;)

Torsion axle using a coil spring.
Horse & water trailers used them. Comfortable riding suspension.
Not sure anyone makes them now, the rubber torsion axle took over

3000# looks about right. that includes the weight of the trailer.
You'll find out if you get 1/2 a cord of green wood on & it bottoms out .
When you get a chance, load it up & keep an eye on the axle & spring.

Pic of one on (I think) an old military water/fuel tank :

Outstanding BogyD, You have found what I couldn't find online! It's just what this trailer got. I'm amazed what you folks know.

I'm (as other added) going with PT 5/4 decking. It should look a lot cleaner. Other than 2 ATV on top I hope the decking can take heavy Rounds hitting it. Time will tell.

As you may have saw the frame is getting a treatment of undercoating/ new paint. I'll add pix as it is completed.

Def go with the decking (sounds like you already decided to, anyway)!

Can't beat free :) Load it up ;)

Thx, Load it I will.... till those torsion spring are tight to the axle. How else will I know it's limit?

Free is another-thing. decking is $150, Paint, wiring, ect. But to have a large Scroung trailer priceless.

3000 lbs is where most states start to require brakes. Since that trailer has none, I expect that is the load capacity of that axle. Maybe. And yes, that includes the weight of the trailer.

You have a lot of overhang behind the axle. Be careful loading it, and keep more weight to the front so you have adequate tongue weight. Otherwise it will likely sway, alot.

I'm no fabricator, but I don't like the way it is constructed. Lot of things I would do differently. I'd start small, and see how it goes. I definitely wouldn't toss a green cord on it and take off.

Don't forget, you hafta stop it.

Be safe.

If you want the 5/4 board to stay nice you could throw a couple sheets of plywood down for protection when you were loading rounds.

Or just load the wagon.... It ain't gonna look new forever anyway.

By golly, this is what I'm gonna do (green wood) and be hauling up too 300 miles each way.

2002 1/2 Ton GMC w/tow package. Your right stopping IT is all on MY GMC brakes. Tongue weight I'll use.

What issue do you see as to safety? It is a heavy frame but I've towed much more(w/brakes)

A 12x6 trailer with a single axle will be very easy to overload.

Added a bit of weight to this trailer. With 5/6 decking. 1 " move off the spring indent. Need to work on the tires. Bearings look well greased, I'll add more to those bearings.

Suppose you mean 5/4 decking?

I'll be yank'n logs via winch. Enjoy the pretty pics before the deck is beaten.

Looks perfect to me!

Thx all
add finished trailer. Rims look seem like chrome, or a finish.

We want pics of it loaded,;) or it didn't happen!;)

You all luv updates. Original fenders too narrow for these tires, removed fenders, Tires 12" wide but better in some of the muddy areas I will go and (free Tires) on top if it.

Anyone make fenders out of plastic barrels? Hwy or city's regulations really need fenders or I'd run them naked, but I'll need sumthing. Any advise?

If the old one's fit, leave them on.

I'll add pic as it rolls down the road.

If U R going to the trouble to make new fenders, instead U could use the old ones, flatten the outer edges, or cut off the outer edges and rework them, or just cut lips off and re paint
