black oak down

i used my newly acquired ms361 to take down this behemoth (by my standards) black (what i believe to be) oak. i've been a little concerned over the past couple of months due to other areas having oak wilt, and large branches randomly dying and breaking off in very short periods of time over the past couple of months. figured i would bring it down on my terms since its landing area was the garden, and it's about to get planted.

here's the stump... you can see my little error at the top of the picture. i went to even out the back cut (tree was about 24" at this point) and it started crackling before i expected so i went with it where i was already at.

here's a friend of mine helping me out with his ms290.

here's a picture of what had me concerned. the branches would die (at least 5 of them, all on the same side) and break off, and the inside was black.

thanks. it went exactly where i wanted, even though i figured it had no chance, since it was so lopsided. felt like it weighed a ton, but i didn't cut anything smaller than 4 feet yet, because i just wanted to get it off the garden area.

Bark doesn't look right for Black Oak....got leaf pics?

i've never been 100% on what it was, but here are some more pictures, with a leaf included.

here's how lopsided it was about a month and a half ago or so. it started leafing up later than anything else, but i've never noticed before if it came in later than the pin oaks around like it did this year, if that helps identify it. from this angle, i dropped it almost directly left.

poison ivy (identified on here, lol) i was asking about these huge vines with branches a while back and took some pictures, and it's the same as this. the vine is just on the other side of the tree. a few folks on here said it was definitely ivy. funny thing about that... years ago, poison ivy or oak would leave a little bit of red on me, never spread, and go away in a couple days... last year it stayed on me no less than a month. i know i should have gotten some on me this time with my short sleeved shirt, but i don't have any signs.

do pin oak leaves get that big? the other pin oaks on my property have leaves that are 3-4 inches long, even one that's a little over 3 feet in diameter. the acorns are probably twice the size, slightly elongated.
edit: i originally thought red oak, but the rough bark goes up at least 2/3 of the tree, and from what i've heard, the rough bark only goes up a little ways on red. either way, i'd be happy to know what it definitely is.

Didn't notice the size, your right, not pin.
Probably a black oak like the other you have around. looks like it's in the red oak family.
A tree guru might ID it better,
But it's Oak , good wood in a few years

virginia creeper can look a bit like poison ivy and the two have a tendency to grow in the same places and together here. VC has 5 leaves with sometimes the last two being a bit small.

I'm saying black oak also. Wes, looks like a nice job was done there. And that is a nice bit of primo firewood, too!
As for the vine, that ain't poison ivy. I'm thinking it's Virginia creeper.....

Helped neighbors last fall cut & split & stack after he tried to amputate his foot with saw ( he's good now)

Even wife helped ,used my saws, splitter & tractor .

The trees I was cuttin were 10' from his property line

Took me a week , saw him outside everyday

Never got a dime for fuel , And he never ask if I could use any help

They are real smooth operators , they get my wife to ask me to use tractor , I say no so she says then she will do it .

So I do it about 6 times I've never got nothing

And they sell the wife eggs $2.50 @ doz

Oh well , I got beer ( that I bought and paid for)

thanks for the replies. maybe the two vines just start off together with one growing under the other than separate a couple feet up. here's the main vine that everything comes from, and the second picture is the small vine that produces the leaves that don't have three points.

That looks like a black oak leaf to me, as well as a typical black oak red heartwood in the stump photo (black oak is actually a type of red oak). Similar species of CA black oak here in the west. Large leaves with deep cuts and pointed leaf tips are the give-away.

Poison ivy, like its cousin poison oak, has leaves of three. "Leaves of three, leave them be...". Hard to say if that is PI from those photos.

Nice wood score. Nice saw score as well. Of all the saws I have owned, my 361s are my favorite and the best all-around firewood saws I have ever used.

That one fuzzy vine looks like old poison ivy vine. Black, red or pin, you have some great wood there in 3 years.
