Whiteface just posted “We’re now up to 34″ (86 cm) of Snow on top of Whiteface what a Memorial Day weekend”

With an elevation of 4,865 ft (1,483 m), Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest mountain in New York and one of the high peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.

They say it was also their earliest opening this past year. Hmm...long season.

UN-FREAKING-REAL.......

What can one even say here......plain crazy!

......plain crazy!

I'm sure there are better stories around, but I do recall several decades ago... a cousin of mine was a student at Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks. While preparing for the Fall semester he was paddling on the lake and was overtaken by a snow squall. (So, it was late August or early September) This might have been in the late 1970s. Their elevation is about 1630 msl.

Not too impressive by comparison, I guess.

There's a difference between Lake Placid temps and Whiteface Mtn's. It's called whiteface for a reason. Snow in May is not so unreal at almost 5000 ft.. We were at Crater Lake last week and started seeing snow above the mile level. Weather can be much chillier at high altitude, even when it's warm at sea level. I note that it's 68::F at Lake Placid right now. The record low at the lake today was 25F in 2008, yesterday's low was 26F in 1969.
