Feeling the Heat

My neighbor has been watching me split wood by hand for several weeks, and makes the occasional comment but just small talk. Yesterday she tells me that she is the caretaker of a piece of land 5 min from me that has standing dead OAK, and HICKORY by the TRUCK LOAD!! She asked if I would like to go "cut it down"!

I went with her today and it's a huge open area with MANY dead standing oaks and hickory! Her brother dropped the perfect size oak yesterday, and BUCKED it, and left it for me!!! Two truck loads of dead standing oak! I split one round to see how dry it was and when I knocked two pieces together it sounded like two ball bats clacking together!

Going back in the morning (and every weekend for a LONG time) to get all I can!!

WOO HOO

Picks to come tomorrow or Sunday.... daughter turns 3 tomorrow so I'll be busy.

I leave my hickory, cherry, apple, and pear for smokewood.... My goto for winter heat is locust... with a healthy smattering of maple and ash....

It's still a pretty sweet score :D

Sweet!!!! Reminds me of the scene in "Field of Dreams" where the "ghost" father says to Kevin Costner "is this Heaven?" and he says back "no, it's Iowa..."

In your case it would be "no, it's Kansas" and "YES IT'S HEAVEN"!!!

YOU LUCKY MAN YOU!!!

"Happy birthday" to the little one-give her the day off from choppin' and splittin' lol!!! ;lol

That oak sounds like two ball bats clacking together.... I think it's good :) :)!

The party starts in 4 hours... I would rather go split and stack! :)

That is one beautiful family!!!!!!

Great find too Donnie. Time for a nice present to that neighbor too.

I never had a daughter but my oldest son turns 50 in a couple weeks.....

I've found that I can't rely 100% on the sound. Now if they sound good and the splits feel light for the species I'm working with....probably pretty dry.

I bet that wood will be waiting for you when you get back. ==c

hey Woody... for OAK it does feel really light weight, but we'll see how it looks when I split it.
I split a few onsite just to see what it looked like inside. I LOVE splitting oak! Splits like ice blocks compared to some of the ash and hackberry I have been slaving over!!

I've been fooled on the sound; Now, I remind myself that it has to not just sound hollow, it has to ring like a bell. Sounds like a lot of that, especially the branches, may be pretty good by fall. When you split it open, sometimes it will feel cool, which indicates that there's still some moisture evaporating.
