Free Large Barn (Harbor Beach) Mi, http://thumb.craigslist.org/zip/3871613615.html
Need someone to dismantle old large barn and haul it away for free. Lots of wood. Located in Harbor Beach on Helena Rd.
A total cleanup would need to be provided by you, no partial removal and the metal doors are not included.

I haven't decided if this is more or less rediculous than the folks asking to have large trees in hazardous locations removed for free in exchange for the wood.

If I owned something like that I would contact the local fire department and have them do a training burn and be done with it. That is a good way to remove barns, old houses and trailers here, and get around the hazardous material removal requirements and high dump fees.

People here do tear down old barns and plain the planks down and resell them, along with the beams and used tin roofing material.

I know a guy with a boom truck that used to take people up on these things. He made good money with the timber. Helps to own to own boom truck I suppose.

You can have the crap, and must take it all, but I am keeping the Metal doors. What a generous asswipe.
There my Amish round here that will actually take the wood for free and reclaim it. If the wood is in good shape, especially the beams, they make good money off it. The leave the stone though many times.

I tore a big barn down before to use the beams and wood in my house remodel, and let me tell ya, it wasn't an easy job....

I think this guy's cheese slid off his cracker......yes, the wood, roofing, and stones from the foundation are all worth money, but the work involved (especially for the average Joe) is massive. I've been there and done that.

The least this clown could do is pay a fuel fee, and throw in his cherished metal doors to sweeten the deal.....

I haven't see it lately but do remember many years ago when folks would sell a barn like this just to get it torn down and would get many good offers. I also remember a friend who did tear one down. He sold the barnwood and got good dollars for it as many like to use it for interior decorating. The beams speak for themselves. Probably nothing worth anything for the old milk house in this one.

I also tore down a building a couple years ago and kept anything that was good. What was no good we dug a hole and buried it right there. I also got some more good roofing for covering wood stacks.

What happen a lot of the time with this kind of thing is the same as someone wanting a tree down for free and you get the wood. Someone will step up and then take some and the barn owner will not hear from them again.

Some one can make money there, that "barn wood" sels for unreal prices!

Knock yourself out getting that FREE barnwood and then selling it to strangers on CL. I been pickin away at my old barn and it is way more work than you want to imagine. If you think felling a tree can be iffy you ought to climb around on a rotten old barn tryin to get the goodies offin it.

That's usually the way it goes down in my area. Alternatively, someone will make a medium sized donation to the volunteer fire department, and burning it down becomes a training exercise. Beer is usually involved after.

I had a client of mine get his barn taken down in trade for the material. There is a market for that if you look online. Many barns are just worth the trade for the material but the occasional one is worth some cash. I know it sounds crazy but a lo of people take guys like this up and take down the barns.

There's definitely a market for it here, and an acquaintance of mine actually owns a business that does just this, with a few important differences.

1. Historically accurate, as most of the buyers of these structures are purchased by wealthy owners of our countless historic "gentleman's farms."

2. Smaller, most being 20 x 20 to 40 x 40 feet, timber frame.

i see this stuff all the time on CL, around here 2/3 the time people usually want you to pay for the barn plus remove it completely and do a cleanup

people think barn boards are gold

People on CL think everything is gold. They have converters in their heads that tell them that whole live trees are worth the value of cut, split, delivered and stacked dry firewood, as well as all the limbs cut, chipped and removed 'someplace else'. Barns are worth the price of all the dismantled rare old growth non-rotted straight planks and beams that have had all the nails removed and have been re-milled. Old rusted out half composted Chevys are worth what they are being auctioned for fully restored on TV. And old heavy metal Stihl chainsaws... well, those are worth their weight in gold, 1:1.
