Is one of your AC units blowing towards your Fireview? Wonder if your creating the sweating glass syndrome were the stones are staying warmer then the air your cooling, thus sweating in a sense? Warm air on the chimney side , cold air on the outside of the stone.. Maybe open your draft to allow air to circulate?

Actually it is, but it's about 14' away...... I was able to clean it with a damp cloth, I can still see some of it right at the very edge of the cast iron frame but the only way I'm going to get that is to pull the stones off and clean them. Doesn't bother me that bad, the stove isn't even a year old yet but I'm sure after a few years I'll be cooking right on the stone! :)

Just noticed tonight, my Fireview has those black stains working their way out around the top stones as well.. Must be the humidity ... Had my draft wide open to let the stove breath inside.. Any answers from Woodstock on what it is?

TheBean (of Woodstock) replied in post #11. I haven't cleaned mine up yet but I'll report back when I do.
Either seal off the top of your liner or lift the lid and stuff something in the flue to keep humid air from reaching the stove. Leave a note on top of the stove so that no one tries to light the stove without removing the obstruction!

Whoops, missed his post..

I cleaned the stone with just warm water and a cloth and it came right off with a little elbow grease. I have a damper on my setup so I closed it to see if that would be enough but the stains are coming back, so I will put some insulation in the pipe for the rest of the summer.

I think after looking at my top stones as well,, it just looks dark because it's moisture.. I believe too,, once the stove is fired back up it will just go away..I thought it was creosote leaching through the stone, but a closer look, it looks just like water or moisture has just darken the stone,, I stuffed a plastic bag in the pipe at the exit of the stove.. She's coming out soon to head back to Woodstock anyways,, trading her in...

I'm glad I read this thread, I'm installing a new Fv (new to me anyway, it's a refurb) this season.

Hey Charlie, I hope your enjoying all this tropical weather. I'm not getting the miles on the scooter that I would have hoped for.

Let me know when the Fv goes back. I'm looking forward to a great 2013/14 burning season! :)

Shouldn't be long now.. I built a nice wooden ramp with a long shallow incline so as to make wheeling the Fireview off of the hearth easy.. Going to work on that over the weekend , then when the weather looks good , I'll take her over to Woodstock.. I'll certainly let you know when she's on her way over.. Just don't want to drive it over in the pouring rain... It will have a tarp over it anyways...want to keep in nice for you!

What are you getting for a new stove charly? And I didn't realize Woodstock took trades, that's awesome!

Getting a Progress Hybrid.. I'm using their standard 6 month satisfaction policy,, in my case , I want to get something a little larger then the Fireview, I'm heating 1900 sq ft,,, Fireview is rated to 1600... I could run it more aggressively , but then I'll just be eating through wood I feel.. I was originally going to get the Hybrid but thought the Fireview would work.. Maybe burning some Oak would have been a different story... I have a refurbished 1840 farm house, maybe a modern newly built same size house would be fine... One thing I noticed today, as the rain and humidity are leaving the area, all my staining on my top stones is all slowly going away, like it was never even there..

Ya, that staining is weird. This is the first I've heard of it and so far we've never got any of it. I wondered with all the humid weather we've had but we still are high and dry. Charly, you are going to love that Progress.

But I'm going to miss the Fireview Dennis.. To me that was a really good designed stove, simplicity at it's best... Seeing how well designed that stove was is what made me want the Fireview.. Everyone who owns one knows what I'm talking about... and then to have parts priced way below what you would think they would cost makes the Fireview even better to own. I'll sure miss her;sick
