Agreed. My sense is that the great majority of Craigslist sellers want more than their items are worth. At least if they list the price, a reader can quickly decide to ignore the ad. When there's no price given it's still probably a waste of time to call, but the cost (in time) of finding out for sure is higher. It's irritating to me as a shopper, and I doubt it plays to the sellers' advantage in most cases.

Here's one I was curious about. I even called. Despite the ad's wording ("One of the chain saws is a Husqvarna. The second one is a Husqvarna."), the saws are a Husky 55 and a Stihl MS290. But the sellers are basically computer illiterate and don't seem to understand what sort of information a buyer of such tools would want to know. Given the small chance of a deal working out, it's just not worth the trouble.

Husky Ranchers and Stihl Farm Boss saws are the bestest saws! Am I right or am I right? They always command a premium on CL. You have to figure out if you live on a farm or a ranch before buying them though. Me, I prefer to be the boss.

I emailed the seller -- he wants 140 cash for the ms250. I had asked if he would take 85.

Scotty -- So far this year I've also gotten an 026 for $47, 024 for $75, 254xp for $40 (needed a piston) 346xp for $100 (ran but the piston was scratched) And , my biggest money maker, 20 saws for 125 which included some runners (385xp, 268xp 55, 61)

There are more that I'm forgetting, but it doesn't hurt to ask for their best price. The response might surprise you. The 20 saw deal I got was a CL ad asking for offers. I started at 100 and he countered at 150 and settled in the middle.

You're obviously buying these saws to flip them so you need to get them cheap, but how did you decide to offer $150 for a lot of 20 saws that included a running 385XP? That's so far below market value for even the one saw (let alone 20) that I would think you'd be afraid of offending the seller and losing out on the deal altogether. Did you have embarrassing photographs you could threaten to publicize?

I'm buying the saws to fund my CAD

When I saw the ad for the saws it was poorly written with no mention of which saws and no pics. I gave the guy a call and after talking a few minutes I knew that he had almost no money in them and didn't care much about saws. So I started low.

Turns out that he had been working with a local chain of pawn shops. He was there Mr. Fixit for anything with an engine. But the pawn shop wasn't willing to put much more $$$ into the saws then a carb kit and fuel line. So the guy had bought the saws real cheap from the pawn shop (maybe even got them for free). All of them needed some minor things but I had so many saws I was able to mix and match parts. In the case of the 385 it had a weak coil, still ran, but hard to start. I took a coil out of a 350 in the pile of saws and it worked great.

Actually no, I was referring to what we call a bar here in the states, what 'chainsaw experts' commonly call a blade in CL ads. My friends in Norway call chainsaw bars blades for whatever reason. Norse legend and the history of Viking swards I guess. They had better steel far earlier than anyone else, and could make longer lighter swards that were far superior in battle. There were even knock-off Viking swards in those days (10th century) that looked similar, but did not have the proper carbon forged iron or tempering, and they tended to break. Similar to the Chinese knock off chainsaws on Ebay and CL that look like Stihl chainsaws, but they also tend to break. Not much has changed in 1,000 years.

I think that reciprocating saw in the photo there would break me...
