Last year about this time i posted advice on extended warranties on a $2500 french door fridge.
My warranty has expired all of 2 weeks when my ice maker crapped out. Good thing i have an additional 4 Yr extended warranty on this appliance purchased for $99 from Home Depot. Im all but certain it will cost more than that to fix and there will be more issues within the next 4 years. ALready in the first year the Mfg warranty paid for about $1000 worth of repairs in 4 in home visits.
Incidentally sears charges from $500-$750 for the same warranty(which is why i didnt buy the fridge from sears)

In my original post last year one member lambasted me for numerous posts about what a waste of money they are.
I agreed that electronics LCD tvs, Ipads ect are very reliable and i dont buy extended warranties on them.Appliances are another matter.

I don't buy extended warranties, but for $99 I sure would. Sounds like your fridge needs a lot of TLC. You sure got your money's worth for $99!

That warranty cost about as much as my current fridge did. In 1985.

Todays refrigerators have way too many moving parts to last 5 years trouble free. Also have a $300 window air con that crapped out after 1 year. Too bad i burned the box and cant find the receipt.

I just bought a nice GE 18CU Ft bar fridge for $425.00 Last year, way less than the price of the sears warranty.

My Amana is about 6 years old, bottom freezer type. I've had to repair it only once. The automatic defrost didn't work, and the evaporator froze up into a solid block of ice. A new control board ($99) cured that. I think the defrost didn't work from day one, probably bad firmware. I could force a defrost cycle, so the driver was good. It was under warranty at the time, but the repair service said 5 to 7 working days to look at it. In the meantime, my food was spoiling. I put the new board in about 4 years ago, no problems since. Even the ice maker still works.

But yes, there are a lot of parts to go bad. There's a blend door and motor, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, two temperature probes, a couple of micro switches, a fan, the ice maker, the control board, plus the usual compressor, starter, etc.

Still, it's better than lugging ice to put in the icebox!

Actually, I reluctantly purchased the extended warranty for my Droid X2 smartphone when I bought it (per wife's orders).....
Good thing I did that, as I am on my THIRD phone, and SECOND battery......

Well phones are probably the exception to that rule, i made the wife get insurance on her new Iphone after she dropped the last one in the toilet.
Worse still she washed it in the sink with soap and water,i brought it back to life 3 days later with a hair dryer.

Its an LG and i probably would not buy one again.I Iike GE and maytag for fridges mostly. Bought this one cuz it was 32 CU Ft capacity. Even when its working right the paper thin sheet metal gets dings and dents from everything that bumps into it.

We see a lot of LG boards go bad. I loathe LG & Samsung appliances. Good for business though.

Are you playing roller ball in the kitchen??lol

I have the Kenmore Elite made by LG...Does yours have the tiny ice maker that holds about three cubes??

I actually like small ice maker(that doesnt work now) It holds about a gallon of ice, thats enough so it dont set there for weeks and get that stale freezer smell. I use it daily (when it works) and dont run out of ice.
Daughter bumped the freezer door with the sweeper ,2 dents, at least 6 visible dents in 6 months. SS is paper thin.

Thats the first thing they changed out 2 weeks after i got the fridge and it wouldnt cool from day1.DIdnt do much diagnosis when they finally showed up ,tech said well thats usually the problem ,well it wasnt. After they swapped out every possible part 3 weeks and 4 visits later it started working correctly. Now 8 months later the ice maker crapped out.

So far so good for mine...Fingers crossed!!

I didn't get the warranty because they wanted 4 or 500 for it!! Truth be told, I probably would have turned it down at 99.00! Hope I don't regret it, glad you have yours covered!!

I was actually considering an LG. I have a LG washer and it has been trouble-free for 5 or 6 years now.

On the other hand, I have a Bosch dishwasher that is supposed to be highly reliable and it has been nothing but trouble. You can't win anymore.

My first Bosch dishwasher was about 15 years old when i sold the house it was in and still working,my second lasted about 3 years. My next fridge will be Either Maytag,GE, or Whirlpool.

My first and last time for LG. I normally have good luck with GE. Whirlpool,& Maytag. Worst out there Frigidare IMO ,had a 3 matched set of SS Fridge ,micro, and DW all fail within 2 years old. I buy a lot of appliances for houses i sell and rent as well as my own.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't own any LG products but thought they were nice looking. Guess looks with poor function is a wave of this future. All the appliances here came with the house. Mostly GE, and holding up pretty well. The washer & dryer are Maytag and they are doing ok also.
My parents have an LG tv and it has been issue free, and also 2 LG mini split A/C units, and they work good and trouble free. Guess LG should stick with what they know and stay out of the kitchen appliance market.

My only problem with stainless steel is keeping it clean. Every time I touch the door to my microwave, it leaves finger prints all over the thing.
I will prolly go with black again or the appliances that look like stainless but really are not.
Even with new technology, things just are not built to last like in the past. Everything is disposable it seems these days.

Some of the new SS are smudge-less. Not sure how effective, but that's how they advertise them.

My experience with LG.
Bought new home and we decided we wanted top of line appliances in our price range. $6100.00 for fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher. We had stainless Frigidaire before and hated the smudges so went with high gloss black on the new LG's.
Big mistake, showed smudges even worse.
Within 45 days top element in stove shorted out and fried switch and control panel. 3 months later motor on convection oven died. 1st week scratched entire front of microwave with a paper towel while cleaning it, 9 months later the control panel quit because of steam from cooking.
Now for the fridge. In the first year ice maker quit 4 times, always leaked water and after a year the motherboard went bad at an out of pocket expense of $900.00
The dishwasher was the only trouble free thing we had but we only had all of them for 2 years before I had to relocate for work so we sold them with the house.
Bought new cheaper appliances ( Frigidaire again ) everything for about the price of the LG fridge and after 2 years not one problem. Extended warrenty for LG was a total $899.00 for 4 years $199.00 for 4 years on the Frigidaire.
May have just been my luck but I don't believe ill ever buy LG again.

WHen i first priced the LG ALL stores had exactly the same price on the fridge but all had a different price terms on the warranty. AS follows Sears Warranty 4 YR 550-750 (checked it twice got 2 dif prices) Best buy $425
:Lowes 5Yr Aprox $199, Home Depot 5 Yr $99 . So of course i got it from HD.

We got all Kenmore white stuff from Sears when we built 17 years ago. Haven't replaced any of it yet - although I have a new pump here to put in our washer (developed a small leak around the shaft), and our fridge & dishwasher are showing their ages but still working. Had to replace one oven element & one stove element a long time ago. The washer & dishwasher have seen an incredible amount of use over all that time, with three growing kids all along the way - I'm amazed they are still going. We are getting to want to update, but not sure what we'd update to that would be as good as or any better than they've been to us - especially when I read some of the stories on here.

As i said my old 20 year old bosch is still working the 3 Yr old one is not. Obsolescence is built right in today.
