after lots of research and reviews, I was dead set on getting the Lopi Freedom.... until I went to new dealer today and we saw the Hearthstone Clydesdale. this stove looked great, felt solid, looked solid. and the wife loved it. Now I am back in debate mode between the Freedom and Clydesdale. any opinons?

I could go either way and be happy but the Clyd is also $500 more, so not sure if its worth the extra money.
my only reservation on the lopi was by possibly being too hot with 2.9cu.ft box and large heating capacity. i'm only trying to heat 1700sq ft total. maybe the Clydesdale with 2.4 box is better suited. just a thought.

If your looking at the Clydesdale, then look at the Montpelier in the enamel brown it has elegant dental molding and firs up very nice.... image.jpg image.jpg

Good luck, I think your looking In the right direction....Hartman i300 may be a contender as well, but I wouldn't trade my VC

Heating 1700 sq. feet with an insert? Definitely go with the bigger firebox. 2.9 is an appropriate size if you gonna heat with it. I've installed several Clydes, there nice, but don't let the size of the Freedom scare you off.

On thing that really causes trouble for the clyde is an uneven hearth and fireplace face. If you have either one, it's hard to make it look good.

I was expecting this, what took 10 minutes.....
So what is the life expectancy of my stove because it is a VC...:)
I have never heard anything bad about the Montpelier. There's no reason to think it has a short life, after all, it doesn't have the plagued VC combustion system. It's a good looking unit, I was just funnin.

Get the bigger one for 1700 sqft and Mass winters. I remember your layout. You will heat a central room with an open hallway on one side and an open entrance to the living-room on the other. I doubt you will have problems moving the heat around. When it gets really cold you will be glad you have that additional heating capacity. As we say: you can always make a smaller fire in a big stove but not a bigger fire in a small stove.

1700 sq ft will require a larger unit, go big, know what you want to accomplish, and then go in that direction...

The Clydesdale is a great insert with a really nice big fireview. It's a class act, nicely finished.

When I was looking I think I remember that the Clydesdale is too shallow to load front to back. I think you can fit more wood in that way as well, so 2.9 may not really be 2.9.

I fought to try and get the clydesdale but wife liked the hamptons looks better.
