Solid fuel in a garage or any structure that is used as a storage area for motorized equipment boils down "pun intended" to one thing. Flammable vapor.

Had a discussion with an inspector this past week on this topic. In a nutshell here's what NFPA 211 says.

You're OK if the solid fuel appliance is
A: in a separate room which is not accessible from the "vehicle storage area". The boiler room cannot have an access door directly into the VSA.
B: in a room which has "indirect access" to the VSA through a hallway or other space that has an additional door.
(in other words you would have an intermediate room between the VSA and the boiler)

So, have a door that opens towards you, make a 2 foot hallway, then another door opening into the VSA, or an accordian door, and that would satisfy code? Easily done, and fairly inexspensive.

Something like that......
The code officer that I was speaking with was the head inspector for a local county and he just said "hallway", did not specify length. What you're suggesting would probably pass the letter of the law but I would be a little apprehensive given the variable nature of inspectors.
In the situation you suggested, I would run it past the local inspector first. He may have some "input" as to what his definition of hallway actually is.

You are barking up the right tree though. They want a separation between the wood burning area and the parts of the building where a vehicle may be stored, parked, worked on etc.

No matter how many times your salesman tells you your boiler will work fine...

It is not code compliant to reduce the flue size.

Very true. Had a service call to a local dairy farmer that did a DIY replacement of his milkhouse water heater. The old one had a 50,000 btu burner in it and used 4" B-vent for the stack. The new one he replaced it with has a 199,000 btu burner.
"I wanted HOT water" he said.;hm
"I didn't think the chimney would make a difference" he said:rolleyes:
"It worked with the old one" he said:oops:
"I thought that little button was defective 'cause it kept popping" he said!!!

He found out that one shouldn't reduce a stack from 6" to 4" after he bypassed the roll out switch on the burner manifold and torched all the wiring on his new water heater :)
Farmers. Gotta love 'em. They are an independent lot.....==c

Farmers. Gotta love 'em. They are an independent lot.....==c

I got'em for inlaws...........

I do not do any work for them on the farm.....................

It's better that way....................

For all of us........................

On the NPFA 211 our guy allows it with out a hallway, as long as it has a self closing door. At least, the last time. A lot of inspectors are private third party guys that are running all over the state and when things are unclear they call Lansing to make it more unclear. Just ask about when to enforce CSD-1 compliance and who's responsibility each part is. That answer is clear as mud.

Free heat machines are not efficient. I have to keep telling myself this, over and over....
