Just wondering what you guys are getting for stove top temps with your inserts. No free standing stoves please. I have a thermometer on the top plate of mine and I run my blower on low. I know free standing stoves run higher but inserts run lower because of the blower running. What should I be running at with good seasoned wood?

Which insert do you have and exactly where on the top plate do you have the thermometer? If it is above one of the fan/convection paths the reading will be much lower than if directly above the top of the firebox.

If I pull my surround the temp at the top of the firebox, just forward of the outlet, is around 600°F during my normal burn. If the surround is on the places I can put a thermometer get no higher than about 400°F.

Hard burns can get the top near the outlet up to 800°F but I rarely go there...

There are several threads on this subject, do a search on insert temp or temperature...

I don't have a temp guage on top of the insert but the stack runs 550-600 the face of the stove I run 350-400

Our Avalon Rainier which sit 11 inches out onto the Hearth, and has a blower (set the speed depending on who is in the room, and needs....it's a little bit noisy)....usually about 450*F is cruising for the night....may get it up to 600*F to start with till the house temps are where the Wife likes it......about 74*F....1700 sq. ft. Split Level Ranch...

Lopi freedom, running well is 400-500F, I try to keep it in that range or else the house overheats. I've never noticed a significant temperature change with the blower on lowest speed. Even with the blower on full speed, it might only drop 50F.

Osburn insert and my stove top when running it after being dampered down is 550 to 650

Only experience I have with an insert was my old one I burned in for 21 years. When it cracked and ran away the IR thermometer registered 1,425 degrees. The paint on the stove top thermo burned off at 1,100 degrees.

Prior to that I ran it at 550 to 650 stove top. Just like I do my free stander in the fireplace now. The old insert and the stove I burn now have a 150 degree split between the face of the stove body and the actual top plate temp. Tested it many times on both. Blower on either one drops the stove top reading about a hundred degrees. From the air passing over the thermo.

My Lopi Answer is freestanding, but it is the same jacketed construction as the insert. When running with the fan on low, the stovetop (middle front, on stove not jacket) my stove cruises at 550 degrees F. With a full load of hickory or mix of hickory and sugar maple, 600 degrees F.

WOW I don't know what I would do if my stove did that. That had to be a little hair raising!!

My Osburn usually runs between 550-650. In the dead of winter it's not rare to see temps over 700 if I reload NS over a good coal bed. These temps are while running the fan on low. If i blast the fan on high stove top temps will eventually drop. We rarely run it on high for longer than an hour or so.

The PE, with thermo set on the right front corner of the face, cruises at 600F or so, in the dead of winter. Fan usually on "low", about 1/4 turn to the right if it's really cold outside.

I've had some 800F temps, but they don't scare me any more. Ever since I pushed 1000 one night _g

I also had a Napoleon 1101 insert (1.7 cf firebox). I had the thermometer on the front of the unit because of the limitations of surfaces to properly measure temps. That unit would rarely get above 500. I think it usually cruised around 450.
