Corn and pellets

Interesting pricing going on for me this year. I burned all corn for almost 3 years and then switched to pellets when corn shot up. I picked up a ton of Magic Sparks this week from Menards as they are on sale and liked them last year for $200. New crop corn is at $147 a ton. I was going to pick up another ton of wood pellets in case there wasn't a better sale till later in the fall but now I may just hold off and see if corn continues to drop. The forecast is for further drop. This is good and bad as I also farm.

I like burning corn but loved only emptying the ashes only three times last year with pellets.

Anyone else looking at going back to corn?

We still have a ways to go till the corn is in the bin! We have great crop going here but things are getting dry and about a week to two weeks behind. Starting wheat harvest in ernest which is about three weeks behind. Wish Menards had better pellets if only for the Elena. May bite the bullet and buy a ton of blended pellets for it from a pellet broker and go back to 90% corn for the Harmans.

I've only been burning for 2 years now, and corn has been too high the entire time, but I have a multi fuel stove. I wasn't considering burning corn until I saw your post. Now I am. Might have to look into that.

Corn to be price effective usually needs to be handled in bulk. Some screening to remove the fines. Vermin issue too. Its also is more errosive on the venting. It may not be worth the gamble unless you are going to be able to use and handle a couple years of material.

Correct. Bulk is the only way to go. I'm setup with gravity wagons and my appliance is rated for 100% corn.

I suspect there are many who switched to pellets from corn like me though.

There is a corn burning site that has pretty much all details on burning corn. That is how I linked up with my PC45 with the crosslink. About the only site that you can get detailed info on how to run and repair a Bixby.

I'm a member over there too. Things got pretty slow when corn shot up and Sting stopped posting

What Menards did you go to? Sandusky? Ontario? Etc...

They run the $175 a few times a yr. it's nice and I normally take advantage of it. Though my store normally has Somersets

I go to the one in Oregon. I haven't seen the 175 sale since this spring.

They had somersets but I prefer the magic spark.
