Just curious why you would pass on these. I know one of the reasons why I bought a Harman was so I didn't have to be so picky on pellets.

Just didn't care for them. I know a lot of people like them, but when I used them for even a shoulder pellet I didn't like the heat. It's not that they burned bad or gave a bunch of clinkers, but it comes down to heat for me which is why I bought the stove in the first place. Yeah they burned in the Harman, but others burn better for me. I actually loved the Presto logs which are very close in price and readily available to me. Putting the 2 side by side I'll take the Prestos 10 out of 10 times.

Interesting. That is not the way my Harman works. Or many of other forum members Harmans work.

Edit: Maybe there were other factors at play when you were using the Stove Chow that were causing more heat loss...

Not sure how you figure that your Harman works differently than mine. If you set the thermostat to 73 and the pellets your burning cannot get your house heated to 73, first thing i look at is the pellets im burning, especially when on the same day i switch to a different pellet and the stove reaches and exceeds the desired thermostat setting. But maybe you are right, maybe I did something wrong. Either way I will choose a different pellet over Stove chow. So based on your theory Stove Chow will burn just as hot as a Premium pellet? Not sure I follow your logic! I've since burned Hamers and they would blow Stove Chow away.

Yes, but its over a hour each way from western Ct. SO figure it would net out $350 per ton ( pellet + Gas), not including what my drive time is worth :(
I used to say the same thing...'till I was kicking myself with a cold foot in the middle of January
I make the trip from MA to Wauregan, well worth the time/effort.

----Plus...if you go during one of the state aggie fairs, Steve will forget the homemade bacon off of the smoker and you'll get to sample it!

Given that you're one of the members who spends a LOT of time on here, it's hard to believe you don't know how bad they are. The majority of the forum members that have burned them and reported have found out how poor they are.

Not everyone, but the great majority.

I burned some a few years back and they seemed fine. They may even be better this year.
Their new plant in NY may have had some issues getting going but that may be better now too?

I really like Cubex but they would have cost me $240 more for the 3 tons! That is alot of extra doe!

If anyone is interested there are 10% off Lowe's coupons on Ebay, If you buy 3 ton from Lowe's @209 a ton it will save you $62 which will pay for your shipping if you need Lowe's to ship to you.

The local Lowes offers all veterans a 10% discount anytime. I've also seen Lowes 10% off coupon in moving kits/address change packets at the post office. You might try that.

Went to Lowes today looking for pellets. I was told their shipment should be in mid-September. Hope they get in Somersets again. Last year they were $172 a ton with military discount.

Just bought 2 tons of PrestoLogs (Lignetics) from Lowes Flemington NJ, for $200 a ton, plus $65 delivery. They have about 12 tons of PrestoLogs, and about 12 tons of AWF in stock. They did NOT take the 10% coupon, they said when you buy by the Ton, you get the contractor-pack discount, and the 10% coupons dont apply.

Hmm, I wonder if this is specific to that store. I've used the mover coupon on everything, including on sale and price matched items with no issue.

I bought 5 tons from Newburgh store and didn't even try. I've seen so many posts saying that it wasn't accepted.

Maybe buy 49 bags and apply the coupon, if the numbers work out? ;)

If you have a discover card you can get 5% cashback when you buy online, combine that with the 10% off movers coupon. Although you miss the bulk discount they sometimes have if you buy by the ton. Last winter Discover offered 5% back at home improvements stores then you could get 5% cashback by buying online combined with a movers coupon. Effectively like 18% off..

Went back to Lowes today. Instead of Somerset's they now have Greenway's which are priced at $4.98  a bag. I asked for a bulk purchase discount (up to 4 tons) and was told that at this time, there is no discount for buying them by the ton. However, the10% military discount would apply so my price for Greenway's would be $224.10 per ton picked up at the store.

I paid $172 / ton for Somerset's there last year.

the computer stated the same in the newburgh ny store they overrode it.

A Harman will do it's best to reach the desired temperature setting regardless of pellet quality, however the stove does have a max burn rate (or max amount of pellets it's able to consume/burn an hour). I've found that with cheap pellets on really cold days, my Harman may struggle to reach the set temperature because it's bumping up against it's max burn rate. A lot of this is due to heat loss, etc.

Here's where the physics get interesting - when I burn cheap pellets, my heat loss is greater because my stove is working harder and drawing in more air, which is sucking in more cold air from outside through any gaps/drafts in my house.

By burning better quality pellets not only are the btus better, but my stove isn't working as hard which is drawing in less cold air.

Adding an OAK should help, Even with good fuel.
