What is a good way(non fatal) to keep cats out of your property.
My neighbors have cats but they seem to prefer my yard to do their daily dirty business. I have NO cats or dogs but all the mess to clean up. I have warned the neighbors that i have traps and poison in the yard(which i dont)
in an effort to get them to restrain their pets to no avail.

Get a dog

P1010022.JPG I can lend you Otis for a week, guaranteed no cats will be left. Otis does not like kitty cats.

In many municipalities the leash laws apply to cats as well as dogs. Owners can be fined for letting cats run loose.
I'm not sure the laws where you are.
Cats do a real number on desirable wildlife anyway.

It'd cost a couple bucks but could help and be fun to watch!
We just bought one of these to try out on the deer in our garden.
I'm expecting to laugh the hardest when my wife forgets its there and gets blasted.
To be fair, I'm sure she'll reciprocate.

A friend on mine uses a weak BB gun. It works pretty good and isn't fatal

"Otis" what a great name for a rotty.
Looks like my kind of dog.

Boil 1 cup of water, let it cool a few minutes. Mix in 2 tablespoons of ground pepper until it dissolves (stand back as the steam can hit you like a face full of mace) Let it cool and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the area where the cats come over, they hate the smell of pepper ;)

Dump a few bags of sand on neighbor's property. Cats love sand.

I had a few neighbors' cats entering the yard under a fence. I picked up some Bonide brand "Shotgun" spray and sprayed around the fence every few days. It worked well. I believe there are not toxic chemicals in it, but I recall garlic and putrified eggs as ingredients. What made me start to take action is when one of my kids picked up a cat turd on a mulch bed. It became a health issue at that point. I really, really, really can't stand inconsiderate people that think it is ok to let their cats defacate and take songbirds on others property.

A healthy population of coyotes in the area keeps cats in check.

We have one for our main garden and it does work. And yes, I have gotten spritzed a few times when I forget to turn it off while in the garden.

Let the dog poop in the neighbor's yard. ;lol

I did something similar many years ago, had kids knocking over my bird feeders in the back yard. I used a pressurized tank filled with red dye, so I could identify the little perps. Yup just who I thought it was too. Was expecting a call/visit from the parents but it never happened.

and Otis does not actually eat them........

The problem is there are some folks who wouldn't get it.

There is a couple who lives next to me who have outdoor cats which do use our yard as a litter box. It used to bother me but they've lived here their whole lives (literally entire lives) and I moved in and let it slide as their relative used to live in my house, etc, etc, etc.

Long story short, they are some of the best neighbors one could ever have with the exception of those cats. If I made a stink I guarantee the cats would be gone tomorrow. That said, I let go of any angst I saw towards those animals and simply appreciate the fact that my wood piles are generally mice free and they are great neighbors. Not worth causing a potential riff when every other part of living next door to each other is as friendly as anyone could ask for.

Pick your battles I suppose.

The problem is they seem to like to top of the retaining wall that surrounds the patio. Its not like they are burying it somewhere. THese cats want to display it.

Ugh, a cat with no moral fiber.

My neighbors are all a pretty good distance through the woods from me. But when I took in Michelle the wild young stray, every morning she would disappear for three hours. I finally watched and she was going through the woods to the neighbor's yard directly behind us a few hundred yards through the woods. One afternoon I trooped over there and the guy was in the yard. I told him I was sorry about her coming over but at the time we couldn't keep her in the house. He laughed and said "Just leave that little girl alone. She comes over and wipes out those mice under my low deck that I have been trying to get rid of for years and then heads back home.".

Five years later she pretty much stays inside the tree line all day and inside at night. Except to poop. She goes a few feet into the woods.
