The shutters on my house are faded and ugly, and I'd like to repaint them. They are the plain old run of the mill plastic shutters. They are about 16 years old. Fall of 2011 I painted one as a test using Valspar Exterior paint, and it held up well and looks great. I'd like to repaint the rest of them before winter arrives, but I'm running out of time.

I can climb a ladder, scrub them up, tape things off, and brush to my hearts content. However, I'd rather pull them off, scrub and powerwash, prime, and spray a nice coat on them. I assume I'll need to buy new plugs. My worry is that the new plugs won't hold the shutters in place in the old holes. My house has no exterior OSB sheathing, instead the cheap SOB's that built the place just put up blueboard and called it a day.

Thoughts?

Climb and paint. You will hate yourself if you break one of them. I have the same problem except that mine are attached to brick with mortar nails. And I can't do the ladder to the second story ones.

;lol

It isn't the ladder as much as it is that the ground slopes halfway across the front of the house. All the way across the back. The gutter guy damn near died at one point. When he drove up he didn't get out of the truck happy. Ended up hanging them laying over the roof edge.

Send me some pictures. You have a ladder?

I think the OP is saying "Come here! Come here!"

HA! I can do it, but I think it would look a lot better if I sprayed instead of brushed. Not gonna lie, not looking forward to all that time on the ladder. Might have to try hanging out a window or something first!

Pump jacks are easy to set up.

2 ladders with ladder jacks and a plank works also.
Myself, I would pull them down, paint all at once, and reinstall.

I had to pull mine this past spring as I repainted the whole house, but I have metal ones and use screws, BUT in my travels to the local building supply they did show me some new plastic anchor bolts for plastic shutters, those things looked like they could hold a horse on the side of the house, they are bigger and have more teeth to grip on to old wood.
