Thinking about going with 5 tons at about $300.00 per ton..... Are these pellets really that much better???

Some will say yes, Some will say no. Depends on your purse, Your preference and what your stove says. Also what brands and their prices for your region. They are hot and clean. But I'm not sure I'd drop the coin if I haven't seen what they do first hand.

I don't think I'd commit to that much without trying them first. In the odd instance your stove doesn't like them you'd be stuck either mixing them with something or just struggling through it. Unfortunately, I've been there before! lol

I see that you have fireside ultra as part of your stash, are they a really good pellet?

Yes, they burn great in my stove. I wish I could get more but HD only got one pallet last year and haven't seen them since.

oakies are top of line IMO. great heat, little ash. I haven't burned them in a few years though... looking forward to burning the black hills stash this season. 295/ton is what I paid so 300 is right there. They are great in the January cold. saves you from topping off the stove with 3 bags a day when 1 will keep it warm.

They seem to do that. I had the same experience with Somersets and Lowes.

Fireside Ultras are an above average pellet and probably the second best box store pellet after Somersets IMHO.

They are a nice pellet, But second best? I guess its the beauty in the eye of the beholder. There's a few others I think that would give FSU a good run. Hardwood Heat when I could get em for instance. Can't get either cause the PA peeps are hoggin em!

X2, I spent the extra cash on a stove that will burn almost any pellet. Now I do not get the worst but a good decent pellet at the big box stores like Maine's choice for $219 per ton

I guess I meant that are available around my parts....although I did not see any Somersets last year :(

We always love the ones we can't get/have, But make do with what we can. Maybe we'll get lucky this season with some Sets. Heck maybe a new sleeper will fall in the bucket. ;)

Yep..I felt Timber Heats were a nice sleeper last year. I really would like to grab more...and give them a real test.

IMO, $300/ton is too much. Get some of the good box store pellets and save quite a bit of $$ ....Timber Heats, Premier, FSU, PrestoLogs, Stove Chow are some I'd burn, and if you luck out, Somersets.

My move this winter is to lay down the bucks for a ton of great pellets like the okies, and then 3 or 4 tons of the best box store pellets i can get. I will run the good ones at night in the deep cold when i need to make the fire last, and the box ones when everyone is at work school etc.

May second favorite pellet last year was stove chow from hd, for 209 a ton, and i had some other more expensive pellets in here that just came in a nice bag. My fave was country boy white lightening and that is hopefully going to be the ton if when my supplier gets them. Those things seemed in a class of their own.

Grab a few bags of some different brands and start burning them now. Take notes. How hot? How much ash? This is a great time of year to do that. BTW, buy your pellets at the end of the season for the following year. Pellet prices are usually higher just before the season starts. BTW, wish I could score a couple of tons of Stove Chow right now... got my hands on some last year and they were very good. Fireside Ultra too!

if you're not gonna clean you're stove reasonably often, all this "which pellet is best" is a moot point........

Clean? Wha dat! Geez, I just need to keep it filled NO?

Seriously some of the cleaner fuel lessons the load on cleaning. I usually do a once a ton vent sweep. With a cleaner pellet I may be able to stretch it longer. Higher ash fuel not so. I have had near clogs when burning dirt in a bag. YMMV!

My Home Depot in Maine carries them and they sell better than the MWP (Maine Wood Pellet). They burned just fine for me but I found them to leave a bit more ash than the MWPs.

Just got timber heats last night at lowes they had a lot, and pres-to logs, and north American which I didn't hear good things about. They had a pellet called premium pellet made by AWF I got 5 bags of that, does anyone know is that re bagged pellet for the box stores. You hav to call lowes every day to see what they get in.
