Grab a few bags of some different brands and start burning them now. Take notes. How hot? How much ash? This is a great time of year to do that. BTW, buy your pellets at the end of the season for the following year. Pellet prices are usually higher just before the season starts. BTW, wish I could score a couple of tons of Stove Chow right now... got my hands on some last year and they were very good. Fireside Ultra too!
The HD by me has stove chow in, as a matter of fact that's the only pellet they have had so far, so check your HD

Okies are a great burning pellet, clean burning and hot. Not many I'd rather have, but Hamer's hot ones, Spruce Pointe are also two hot burning pellet. Last year, I burned some green supremes, never burned box store pellet before. I've always cleaned up the messes left by them in other people's stoves, but I'll say they burned well. Generally speaking, I'd advise anyone to get the premium if you can. Good luck to all of us.

The only pellet, of those you mentioned, that are in my parts are the green supreme and I did buy half a pallet hope they work out for me too.

oakies are top of line IMO. great heat, little ash. I haven't burned them in a few years though... looking forward to burning the black hills stash this season. 295/ton is what I paid so 300 is right there. They are great in the January cold. saves you from topping off the stove with 3 bags a day when 1 will keep it warm.

I find it hard to believe that in January when it's 0 or below, 1 bag of any pellet in any stove will keep you warm.

How many bags a day is a typical use? I a newbie, have not burned yet
Lots of different factors come in to play here How much sq.ft. trying to heat ,how well insulated is the home, type of stove how hard do you have to run it to maintain desired temp.
I burn a bag a day heating 1650 sq.ft.

I'd say I average about 1 bag a day in winter, but maybe 1.5 or 2 on the coldest days.

I see that you have fireside ultra as part of your stash, are they a really good pellet?
The FSU burn ok, but very ashy. You will need to clean stove more often.

Thinking about going with 5 tons at about $300.00 per ton..... Are these pellets really that much better???

That's $123.00 a ton more than I paid for my FSU. That's a no brainer no matter how good $300.00 a ton pellets are. FSU are still my choice.

o that's great to hear, I have a question, is there a certain type of surge protector that you woul recommend for the stove?

X2 exactly what i discovered. If I wanted to talk about shoulder pellets, this would be a good one as it's not as cold out for having to shut down your stove to clean more often;

Not to discourage questions at all, but there are many good answers already on site if you do a specific search for surge protector within the pellet forum! I've found many good answers on many topics that way.

I, on the other hand, have burned close to two bags per day in the coldest days heating a less than 1,000 SF house because I don't have good insulation

Bad Dad, who in our area has Okanagan's?

Okies are definatly worth the money, burn very hot and clean:ZZZ

but if you burn 2 bags for every 1, until the cheap ones are 150 vs 300, its actually cheaper to burn the better stuff.

IMO, $300/ton is too much. Get some of the good box store pellets and save quite a bit of $$ ....Timber Heats, Premier, FSU, PrestoLogs, Stove Chow are some I'd burn, and if you luck out, Somersets.
if any of those brands where here, I wouldn't have bought what I did.

I've yet to see any of those this year.
