Feeling the Heat

I recently got taken by a firewood supplier off craigslist again. I specifically asked for wood that was split small in size because I owned a small stove Jotul C350. I was assured that they would bring me small splits so I ordered three face cords. They dropped the junk off and the splits are so large it would be hard to fit them in my Jotul F500 let alone the C350.

My new neighbor saw me out there splitting it and asked me if I wanted to barrow his wood splitter that he has in storage. I was so happy because the wood I received contains a ton of knotty pieces .

I am assuming you were not home when they dropped it off ? If not call them up its your right to complain , who knows maybe you'll get some free wood.
Great to have a neighbor like that ;)

I was a bonehead. They pulled up and I took a peak at the wood on the top of the load which looked good. I told them to dump it on the backside of the barn and paid them because the neighbor kids and everything was happening while they showed up. I should have known something was up because they sped off. I went back to look at it afterwards and most of the pile was huge. I spoke with him and he told me splitting wood is part of burning wood. It just turned into an argument. I didn't pay a premium price at $50 a fc delivered, but I didn't want to have to process it which is why I buy my wood.

If I buy cut and split wood I expect it to be split the way I want it, I like mine split big but that's besides the point. If I'm going to split wood I'll scrounge and get it for free. Oh well, you met a nice neighbor in the process and can cross that guy off the future buy list.

That wood will heat you twice; Once when you burn it, and you already got hot when you saw that you had more work to do. ;hm

At least you met your neighbor with the splitter as a result.... ==c

That would be three times as still have to resplit, 4 stack , 5 retrieve to stove. Boy your going to be warm.

Hmmm, $50/fc is not a premium price imho.
I would expect it to cost more where you are, but up here, $65 is a good price for freshly c/s wood, and I live in the middle of nothing but woods.
I guess it's all relative.
Very nice of your neighbor to offer his splitter. Have fun, and maybe don't use those guys again for wood.

Is a face cord 1/3rd of a cord? So you got a cord for 150.00? not too bad if thats the case. Nice neighbor though.

Nice neighbor, he deserves a 6 pack.

Wood seller being tricky, would have to be a real good cost savings to use him again. ;)
Good fun exercise though :)

Sad, but I'd expect something similar to this from most wood sellers. It is just part of the game. Sad, but true.

For sure if you plan on buying all your wood, you should already be putting up next year's wood. Don't buy in the same year you plan on burning. If you do that, you will find that it will bring other problems with it. Do you really want more problems?

My neighbor came over today and helped me turn lemons into lemonade. I think the end result is about 5 face cords of mostly hardwood so I ended up with more than the 3 I paid for. This advertised dry wood was so wet and heavy. Plus it was a lot of uglies that there was no way I would want to split by hand.

This wood is for 2015 and 2016. I now have about 88 linear feet of wood stacked 4 to 5 feet high. I finally feel that I have all the wood I need to be 2 years ahead.

That's interesting. On this side, I see $40 to $50 a face advertised pretty consistently. I've never bought any so IDK. Either way, we are in pretty cheap firewood land compared to many. Of course, free is better. ;)

Agreed Waulie. I see 50-65 all the time, but I went with the higher number.>>
My brother gets his for 50, and it's relatively dry, but odd sizes and a very mixed bag of wood types.
I just re-read RSNovi's 2nd post. I misread.......my bad. Ignore me.

What I would do........Get one of your buddy's to order a bunch of wood from the same guy with the same requirements, have it dropped and when its not what you ordered , refuse to pay him and sit back with a couple of beers and watch him stack it back in the truck. HA HA , I would mess with him.
