I cleaned the 16' SS chimney yesterday and noticed the caulk around the storm collar should be re-done.

What type of caulk should I use? ie Plain old silicone?

And, no, I don't have any pics of what came down the liner - we have our Oslo rear vented so I have to take the top of the stove off before I can reach the soot. Family issues have been a bit trying the last few days around here. Maybe I can get the stove top off tomorrow & post my 'soot results' then. :)

Get a tube of high-temp RTV at an auto parts store. Seat the collar into a bed of it, then run another bead around the top edge. Ain't nothin' gettin' thru there. ==c

I use gray GE Silicone II. It is rated for 450°, and better be just fine for the storm collar, or you have other problems.

Get a tube of high temp silicone from the local hardware or big box store.
You'll pay the same amount for that little toothpaste like tube at the auto parts store, that you can get a full caulking tube for elsewhere.
Make sure you clean the old caulk completely off. You can final clean with some rubbing alcohol on a clean rag.
When you put the new caulk on, work it in with your finger. Some spit on your finger will help keep it smooth and also helps to keep it from sticking to your finger.
Work it in both directions.

Thanks everyone - we've got storms coming so I can't do this right away but will get it done before long.

You have a liner don't you? I assume we are talking about the same chimney here. If so, regular silicone will not hold up if it's in contact with the liner itself. It must be high temp.

That would make a bit of a difference. Didn't pay much attention to the avatar, but the stove in the fireplace should make it pretty obvious ;em

Yes, there is an SS liner inside the chimney. The storm collar is on the liner extension above the chimney.

I put a bead of mastic around it. It seems to be holding up just fine.

mastic dries out and becomes rock hard over time
you want something that flexes during expansion and contraction

op, for single wall pipe storm collars always use the high temp red stuff, for insulated pipe basic clear silicone is fine

It is single wall pipe. It looks like the installer(s) used plain ol' caulk. It's only been up there 3+ years and about 1/3 of it is already 'gone' ie no longer present. :(

"Red stuff' it will be! Thanks everyone.
