I have a forced air oil furnace and a hot water oil burner venting into same chimney. I need a chimney solution for a gasifier, sooo which makes the most sense? Both long term sense and cost?

1. replace oil furnace with electric furnace for back up. Replace oil hot water heater with electric water heater.
Now I gain a chimney to vent the gasifier which also will heat the hot water.

2. Direct vent oil furnace and go with electric hot water heater to gain chimney for gasifier? I have windows everywhere and wonder if direct venting oil furnace can be an issue even though it will be for back up once gasifier is in place?

3. Direct vent gasifier and deal with the visible stainless steel pipe outside the house that could have been hidden inside the chimney if I free up the flue? looking for best solution long term and cost wise?

1. This depends on your electric rates and would also require the replacement of your furnace.

2. This would probably be the cheapest out-of-pocket solution, also depends on how old your oil tank is and if you want to replace it.

3. The only gasser I'm aware of that is able to be direct vented is a Garn. What I think you are talking about is a through-the-wall Class A chimney.

Also what kind of shape is your chimney in? Is it masonry? Will it need to be relined?

Hope this helps...............clear as pea soup right ;)

Just to muddy the waters even more.....

You could also get a direct-vent on-demand oil-fired hot water heater. You'd have to do a bit of research, but I think some of them can also act as a backup heat source. I'd be inclined to also install an indirect DHW tank plumbed as a zone off your gasifier.

1. oil furnace would be replaced with 5 ton electric furnace but without a heat pump since it would become back up. Not sure of cost including installation?

2. Oil tank is very new but goal is to get off of the oil, so I'd have to replace oil hot water heater to an electric unit to free up the chimney

3. When I said direct vent gasifier boiler, I actually meant either Hi temperature stainless steel insulated piping going outside a wall OR similar lining going down masonry chimney so I'd never have to worry about the condition of the masonry chimney.

Trying to determine best and lowest cost option

I do not remember a lot of your other posts , but if there is a way to get a Garn Junior into your basement it can be direct vented through a wall requiring no chimney .
