Done with cider. Now it is applesauce.

Wife busy at work while I was filling the barn with wood. It was smelling really nice when I came inside. Felt good too as it was nice and warm. Had our first snow today.

I had a bounty of bartlett pears and tried making pear butter but it came out more like applesauce.
Pretty darn good.
As the pears turned more yellow and ripe each batch got more golden and flavorfull.

Never did like pears. However, when we were making cider for a neighbor, he wanted some pears in with the cider. We did not put many in and it did not seem to change the flavor. I think it was a waste of time as you don't get as much juice. He had just heard that some cider mills do it so he wanted to do it too.

Your apples from your property I take it?

We have one BIG old standard Northern Spy but it's in the "off" year. Sadly, it's also probably it's last year and that really peeves me since it's so healthy. Erosion is fixing to take it away and those in control of the lake levels don't seem to think it's an issue to allow for MORE of it. So, I'll be sending some scions off for grafting to some standard rootstock this winter. And we're hoping to go picking ($10 per bushel) this weekend, but we'll be canning pie filling and spiced apples. DH doesn't like applesauce!

Yes, the apples are from our trees. McIntosch is our favorite.

I made applesauce with my Foley food mill. It tasted great, but the mill introduces a little air so that you get air pockets when it's canned. Probably no big deal

Never noticed any problem there.

Lovely
