Hi everyone. I would like to get your opinions on something. I just had a young hardworking guy deliver a half cord of wood in his Ford 150 xl. It's a full sized bed. 6 by 5.5 by 1.5 feet and the load was level at best.. If going strictly by the measurement of his truck, he is short of a half cord. It was ash and maple and charged me $ 75 cut split and delivered. Should I say anything or should I just accept it for what it is. Should I buy more ?

Stack it and see what it truely is.

Was the load loose or tight? With the measurements you gave you do not have a half cord, maybe a third at best. However, $75.00 does not sound so bad for what you got, either a third or half. I hope its seasoned and ready to burn. That is something else that needed to be checked before he took off.

I would not be buying anymore. If your asking opinions online you most likely have already made up your mind to take it for what it is. Better luck next time.

no it's green
You don't have plans on burning that this winter, did you? You might want to contact him and let him know he was short on his half cord delivery. If you stack it and measure it you can see for yourself what you have.

Was it loosely thrown in the bed or stacked pretty neatly? The measurements alone come out to almost .4 cord which would be about 20% less than a 1/2 cord if the wood was stacked in the bed. Loosely thrown it will be a lot less.

If you stack it and measure it you can see for yourself what you have.
That's the only way. I ran into the same thing last year with a few cords I ordered. I pointed out to them that is was short. They brought more out to compensate but it was still a little short. But they helped me stack it and split it down further, so I was happy. There is always a lot of variation depending on how tight you stack, how small the splits are, split lengths, etc. It's never an exact thing.

Was your deal specifically for 1/2 cord? If so then I would call him and say that he was short. If you paid for 1/2 cord you should get 1/2 cord.

75.00 for a true half cord is a good price. Its green you say so stack it for a few years and burn your seasoned wood.
Probably nobody on here will tell you to burn it now for sure. half cord or truck load.. That is the question.

Why not just talk with with the guy you bought the wood from? Not a "You screwed me" confrontation talk, just a chat about wood and quantities of wood and such?

Life is full of "shoulds."

Let's do the math

6x 5.5 x 1.5 = 49.5

$75.00/49.5 = $1.51 per cubic ft

$1.51 x 128 = $193.9 per cord

At that rate you're still paying less than $200 per cord. I don't know what you should do, but here's what I would do if I payed for firewood: I would STFU and keep it coming as >$200 per cord ($193 or so) seems like a decent price.

Kinda depends, at least a little, on where the OP lives. Wood prices vary considerably by location.

Did we ever learn what species this is? Maybe it's actually cheap even short.

True, but they don't vary much south of $200 anywhere so far as I've seen.
A local Cl ad was advertising mixed hardwoods $128 per cord which is $1 per cu. Ft. Split (green for sure). Normally it would be around $300-$400 per cord. Mixed being the lower figure and 99% oak or hickory on the higher end. This coming from a semi desert area. Tells me prices may vary considerably across the states.

So the normal price is $300-$400 and you saw 1 add for $128?

Thanks. It looks fine to me. I can't tell the species. You do have to pick it up. A lot of the price of cord wood is in the delivery.
Very true. As for the OP have you stacked and put a tape on the mix or any other updates to your matter at hand?
