Love the barefoots. Tried them the last several weeks and they burn hot and clean
Thanks - I'm guessing we will be getting our stoves/pellets from the same dealer (not sure if I should mention the name - I live in New Milford)

Just wanted to say thank you for your service to our country. And I would also say to go with the OAK at install time. Mine was a bit of a pain to install but I am so glad I did.
Thanks and yes I will definitely ask - the OAK's seem to have a positive view on here!

I have been around people who have sailed these boats as well as people who built them. I loved hearing stories about both the building as well as sailing...One sailor who I scuba dive with says "we called Russian subs "" chitty-chitty-bang-bang""" Is it still true that our subs are the only ones that are truly invisible after leaving port?
About this forum.. GREAT place...GREAT info...GREAT people...BUT we can be opinionated about the process. You have picked up that a Harman is NOT fussy about pellet quality. IMHO use this to your advantage and burn cheap pellets. At the least , I don't feel it necessary to be anal about pellet purchases by buying a few to test. (heck I purchased 9 tons before burning one pellet! ) Also I'm sure you have picked up on the fact that a clean stove is a happy stove.
My XO went on to the Halibut to do the snooping made famous in 'Blind Man's Bluff'. He was just at our reunion a couple of weeks ago.

That's awesome! I never thought I'd think back to then as the good ol' days, but they really were. I was only in for 5 years - had 2 good friends who did stay in 24 years - both made E-8. I cringe now when I realize this past August was my 30th anniversary of my free trip to Orlando RTC and a nice pension check!

I can't count the times that I've said that I wished I had stayed in. The best years of my life with REAL friends, real responsibility, and real adventure. I still have flashbacks when I get behind a diesel bus and smell those fumes! :) 46 years ago for me!

OMG when I get a good breath of diesel exhaust... I get the 'standing Topside PO/Sentry' flashbacks when they want to run the diesel and blast everyone topside with that thick, white blanket of exhaust!

(I'm sorry to all of you non-qualifieds out there for the submarine chat - we are just such a rare breed that when we bump into each other, every has to suffer through our stories!)

Trading post! Got my stove from Black Swan.
Indeed! The new guy at the other place along Rt 7 (no longer "V&V") seemed to be avoiding my more direct questions (I did my homework before I walked in - wanted to see if he would be honest and forthcoming for good and bad)... So I went to the Trading Post and purchased my Harman 52i and 4 tons of pellets! (honesty for both good and bad does pay!)

How have they been with all your needs, supplies, requests, etc.?

Trading post seems to be more down to earth. I think I may start having them do my annual maintenance starting this year. Black Swan is geared more to aesthetics, as opposed to functionality and use. The staff are quite personable though.

Good to know. I dealt with Peter O. He seemed knowledgeable and straight-forward with a nice sense of humor. From the videos I saw on youtube, the maintenance seems fairly easy, but I'll let them do the first real big cleaning, sweeping, etc. in the spring... then maybe I'll do the annual myself afterwards.

My new stove is going in the 11th.

oh great another squid! (saying that with the absolute utmost respect, but i was army so i have to tease)

the Harman is an excellent piece of pellet stove art, great unit! you will love it.

press your dealer on the OAK, even in a less than airtight house its beneficial. think about it like a snorkel in a diesel boat , if the tube closes pressure drops rapidly (might make your ears pop) now a pellet stove isn't gonna pull the air a sub's engines would , but the principle is the same. in a tight house you would develop negative pressure which harms performance, in a loose house it will make air leaks that much more noticeable bear in mind also if you are burning "house air' its air you already paid to heat that air then you pump it outside.

press for the OAK

You really are a class act Mike. Not many would jump in to still try to help someone who is considering purchasing from a different manufacturer. Your products are excellent also and customer service.. well speaks for itself.

That's 'bubble head' to you 'mud hogs'. :) I guess you didn't have to spend a year to 'qualify' on how to pull a trigger............. Just kidding.......... maybe. :p

As for snorkeling, when I rode the old WW2 diesel boat in a really bad storm, it was absolute hell as the snorkel's valve kept opening and closing and sucking your eardrums out of your head!. Everyone was hovering around the diving plane stations threatening to kill the poor guys trying to maintain depth. We were on ASW ops so couldn't surface. I still think that's why my hearing is so bad.

Oh have no fear about the teasing.... I was in Army ROTC in college until.... well until I didn't go to class much, left after 2 years and went to my friendly neighborhood recruiter. I also realized I was too much of a softy to deal with living outside in a tent with the bugs and spiders! (but somehow the thought of living next to a nuclear reactor, submerged in salt water and with all those those 'I-can-not-confirm-nor-deny-the-presence-of-nuclear-weapons" weapons for months at a time without sunlight didn't bother me... go figure!)

I will check on the OAK for sure now that you put it in simple submarine sailor-proof terms like a snorkel!

"mud hogs"!!!! OMG I'll have to share that one with a few of my bubbleheads from year's gone by! (ditto on the 'year to qualify' line). And as a for the helmsman/planesman stuff... nothing like the nukes back aft giving you 1-2 kts of speed and ignoring the ordered bell "request" of ahead 1/3rd. Yes, I speak from experience and sorry for killing you A-Gangers back aft trying to run the diesel with no incoming air! :(

Get the OAK. It's 119 bucks and 8 ft of 3 in flex aluminum that can terminate in the chimney so long as your cap is slotted to allow air in from the top. I didn't think I needed oak but when I had a wood insert it would pull in air from the sockets and draw a cold draft thru the den.. When I installed my 52i with the oak, it solved that problem perfectly!

We spent most of our time cruising around at 2-3 knots. Quite a challenge for the planesmen. On one patrol, we kept going back and forth through this current (thermocline) that had a temperature difference of some huge amount that I can't remember. It always seemed to happen when I had the Conn on midnight to 6am! The boat would either sink like a rock or want to broach. 2 Knots just didn't cut it then!
Oh and yea to the presence of nukes. No, we didn't have any MIRV'S back then....... no sir. :) Just one warhead per missile. ;hm

Wow thanks - and yea for a $119 bucks at this point, it can do no harm :)
