Hello

This is the worst case I have seen!

I was working on a very nice looking 4 y/o Red Enamel Cast Iron Enviro Empress. The poor Merkle-Koriff was on it's last legs and was very noisy. When I got there the heat level # 3 light was blinking. Auger Trouble for sure. Well I disconnected the flue and spun it around and took the bottom back and two bottom side panels off. The auger set screw came out easily but where the set screw press against the auger it made a perimeter mark pushed the metal up so the motor hung on for dear life! ! ! Therefore after some persuading with the pinch bar I got it off! ! !

Now the stainless steel auger looked ok at first but after some close examination I found some sloppy workmanship. Apparently where the top fins and some of the corkscrew fins are welded, it looks like some tack welding just splattered and made some prickly pimples! ! ! If I were in the QC department and saw this I would easily put it in the reject pile. See 1st pic!

Instead it looks like the auger was set aside for a minute next to the guy with blue sealant and guess what spilled on this poor auger! See 2nd pic.

So after some grinding with the grinding stone and buffing with the wire wheel and smoothing with emory cloth, the auger was sprayed with the Dry Moly Spray. Then to top it off the auger bushings had ring around the collar! The poor auger could not turn very well in it's bushings, like someone not swimming very well in their own swimming pool! So after cleaning the dirty rings and lubricating with tuff Oil Lubit-8, the auger was re-installed. It turned like butter. The a brand new Gleason-Avery motor was put on to make it smooth and quite!

I strongly suggest any new Enviro owners to check your stainless steel augers with a fine tooth comb!

Is this why many new stove auger motors do not last as long as some older stoves? ? ? See yellow arrow in pics below and click on pic to enlarge:

Does anyone know if the issue with the Hi Limit snap disc tripping on higher heat levels has a cure or fix?

The empress and the milan had issues with convection fans. It was only for some stoves with certain serials and I'm not sure what they were...not all of the motors had the issue either. You would have to contact tech as a problem arises, they may have you do a reading on the motor to see if it is part of the issue they are looking for. I have only had one motor that was effected. Everything about the motor seemed fine to me but they replaced it and the problem went away...so there you go.

Hello
Anything on the high limit snap disc being too low? Most other stoves have a 250 Deg trip point.

I've always been curious...what are the fins for? The ones on the end of the auger shaft. My M55 has the exact same looking auger shaft with fins.

Perhaps it breaks the pellets up a little before being fed?

Hi Don,

I get the fact that it should have been rejected by QC but what effect do you think it has on the operation of the auger or the rest of the stove?

I buffed out an auger for a guy and he said the stove worked better than it ever did!

I believe that the pellets get hung up on burrs and slag and actually build up and may help cause an auger jam. A smooth auger delivers pellets much better, that is from my customer comments and their experience. I do what they want. :) That is the difference in the way we service stoves.

Hello

I just learn that the overheating problem with the Empress has been fixed with design changes by Enviro on the New Model Empress! ! !

The new Model DOES NOT put out as much BTUs per hour as the older model! ! ! !

Does anyone know what changes were made? Higher CFM room blower? Auger Timing changes in a newer control panel? Maybe and Enviro stove Dealer has some inside information? ? ?

How many BTUs was the old Empress? How many BTUs is the new Empress?

Take the motor off the auger in the stove. Now try to turn the auger in the stove. The auger should turn freely by hand. Let us know if it does turn by hand, if not you may have the backing plate nuts too tight.

hey don never thought of that, I picked up a motor today, just under 2 bills here in Canada. The auger seemsfine when it was in stalled any idea what the torque should be,, don at what point do you start looking for a newer stove, oil is expensive up her But.., so are parts my motor is a rotom motor.. She is roaring now as we speak... Now. What to do with the 38 bags of. Cozy comfort pellets..;sick

If you want a stove with little maintenance and parts that last with minimum cleaning then do what I did and get a Harman P-Series. I replaced all the parts in my 4 year old Avalon Astoria and was dissapointed with the heat output. I sold it and bought a 12 year old used broken golden fire brown Harman P61 for $1200. I sanded it and painted it Satin black and fixed it up and have been happy ever since!

So just buy a Harman P series and be done with it all! My 2 cents. :)
