These look pretty close to what I was thinking - thanks!

They appear to direct 90% of the heat into the hot water - too much for DHW and not enough for direct-to-air space heating.

We are building a 2400 sqft duplex - 1200 sq ft per side on 2 floors, so a simple 8kW pellet stove should be able to heat each unit (minus 45 design temp, R50 insulation)... but the ability to put a bit of heat into an electric water tank would be even better.

Around 36,000 BTU/hr into the water and 15,000 BTU/hr radiant heat

I would use a BioWin and boiler mate. It would do whole building but landlord pays heat that way. Or put in the small BioWin in each unit with a side arm on the electric water heater. Then tenant pays the heat. If insulated right you would only have to clean once a year as it would not burn many pellets.

You probably would have to put in two systems conventional and then a pellet boiler. At that point your close to the price of a geothermal system maybe more. You dont have to be a slave to a geothermal system it cools your house as well.
