About, I guess a year or so ago, I "won" a Fiskars X27 maul for being one of the 5-10 people who might have made the 1 millionth post here.

Full disclosure, when I started splitting wood Gerald Ford was in the White House.

Full disclosure: I own three Fiskars chopping axes, a couple pairs of scissors, a hatchet, love them all.

I have used several gasoline powered splitters over the years, it really takes at least two men working hard to get the full value out of the gasoline those things burn. I own probably 15-20 different wedges to be used with sledgehammers while splitting rounds into cord wood.

I still own my grandpa's splitting maul, hickory handle, simple head shape, a good tool if you live south of the Mason - Dixon line. I also own a Lowes-Depot modern MiC special maul. Fiberglass handle, complex head shape, not bad for what it is.

I process about ten cords per year. This year, instead of just a glove and lube my doctor is going to give me lots of drugs and a scope along with the glove and the lube. I bought an electric splitter YEARS ago for my volume and haven't looked back. At my annual volume, and at my age, a powered splitter of some kind is de riguer.

So today, with two more cords coming in tomorrow, I had this problem.

optimator.jpg

Spaten Optimator is actually my second favorite dopplebock behind Ayinger Celebrator. I am kinda holding off and getting a bit deeper into Lent before I crack my Celebrator stash, but no driving either way.

So I dug out my X27. Not making toothpicks out of chopsticks here.

x27.jpg

This thing, the Fiskars X27 is the bee knees, the bomb, the Boss, whatever. My electric splitter is still in warranty. I got to dig up the receipt and drag it over to Lowes-Depot when I am morally and ethically safe to drive my truck tomorrow AM, but rather than burn daylight, I grabbed the X27.

It's -2dF up here right now and these rounds have been outdoors since August 2016 that I know of. Even allowing for them being frozen solid, the X27 is tearing them apart like a pack of wolves in a dairy barn. With my other mauls I split like a teenager at -20dF and I can split like Thor at -40dF. At -2dF with the X27, I split like Thor.

I realistically can not see any reason to buy any maul other than the X27 today unless you just can't afford it. If you are burning wood because money is really that tight, the MiC complex headed monstrosity I got from Lowes-Depot is a better all around splitter then my grandpa's hickory handled antique. But the X27 kicks both their butts with one hand tied behind its back.

If you are on the fence, google up "the white death" to figure out if the Finns know or do not know what they are doing. Fiskars X27 is $59.97 on Amazon, free shipping if you got Prime.

If my two sons and I manage to wear out all three of the mauls I currently own, and wear out all of the wedges I own, and I choose to not replace my splitter when it goes out of warranty... I got one son in SoCal and one in Texas... so not bloody likely... but if I ever buy another splitting maul I'll be googling up to see if anything is coming close to the Fiskars X27.

End of story, if I wear out this X27 I will replace it.

Also, if you just can't do German beer but love Jesus and want to do something to mark the Lenten season, well, Guiness Antwerpen does not suck...but my electric splitter is still the broken.

Sorry to hear about your splitter!

Ditto on the praise for the X27. It actually makes splitting enjoyable. I will say, however, that I found myself using the Isocore more than the X27 over the last couple of months. The reasons are 1) elm, 2) some red oak with super gnarly grain, 3) did I say elm already?, and 4) elm again. <>

P.S. Never tried the Spaten Optimator but their Oktoberfest is good stuff!

Apparently, sometimes when posting on Hearth, there is also (lots) of beer involved. Right there with you, buddy.

This was quite an enjoyable ramble, PD, and a nice contrast to your highly technical threads on using the scientific method to get wood as dry as quickly as possible using the sun and your brain.

It's the part about the drugs and the scope that got my attention, though. I hope that you are not telling us that the Dr. found something when "exploring" with the rubber gloves and the lube.

Spaten optimator was my favorite beer for a long time when I was younger. It is some powerful malty stuff.

Would you do us a favor and line up your mauls and wedges, and take some pictures to show us your collection, please. I'd enjoy seeing them, and I'm positive I'm not alone.

Usually that happens when us gentlemen turn 50. I'm hoping that means @Poindexter is coming of age, and not anything more serious.

Out of pure curiosity why is a simple splitting maul any better south of the mason dixon line opposed to anywhere else?

Love the Fiskars and I am south of the MD line.

And I have had the scope twice in the last four years without the drugs. Man up. I have been splitting wood since Carter was Pres. >>

Love my X-27 as well....I also love the ISOcore Fiskar mauls...just bought the second one.I also have a Biber maul but since I and the boys started using the ISOcore mauls it gets left behind..

I have the 25 and 27. Still use the 8 lb maul, much to the protest of my elbow and shoulder joints, for lots of stuff that the fiskars won't touch.

I'm 20 miles or so North of the M-D line, but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything (unless perhaps this was an optimator induced comment, in which case I completely understand).

I'm not familiar with the Justin biber maul. Doesn't sound like something I'd care for.

Justin Biber knows manual labor? :) I think not...pretty sure he is allergic to it...

Real nice collection. Looks you must have some help, too, unless you can swing two isocores are once...
I am very fortunate to have a healthy 23 yr old son and a couple of his buddies who help now and then who are not allergic to work...we can do some damage to a log pile...

I've been splitting since they were impeaching Nixon, my father believed in child labor. A few mauls, wedges and sledges etc. I love my X27, I'm on my 2nd, the first one developed a crack and Fiskars warranted it. I get scoped for the third time in May. They say if you feel the Dr's hands on your shoulders you better worry.

How's the fiskars maul?
I absolutely love the mauls! Felt vibration is greatly reduced over a hickory handled maul..Fiskars claim of a 50% reduction is spot on!

Fiskars is my axe of choice & Guinness Extra Stout is my preferred beverage.
Funny story...spent last week splitting wood that my neighbor gave me. Send a picture of the rounds & the split pile to my brother. he asked if I had rented a splitter...I replied, "I bought one," and sent him a picture of my Fiskars. He did not find that nearly as funny as I did. That being said, I will bring him to the Fiskars side of the wood force...;lol

For at least some types of wood, frozen solid is the easiest time to split them, because it becomes brittle.

I received an X27 for Christmas. The small amount of wood I had on hand only lasted about 15 minutes. Now I'm itching to have some time to start scrounging for the year so I can give it a proper test.

Also, if you just can't do German beer but love Jesus and want to do something to mark the Lenten season, well, Guiness Antwerpen does not suck.

One of my friends at church gives up beer entirely for Lent. I haven't bothered to point out he's doing it backwards, according to certain monks. It's a pretty significant penance for a guy who loves beer as much as he does.

Just about any dark, thick beer will do for me. There's enough good quality beer in the US these days I don't even bother looking for imports except for special occasions, but this St. Patrick's Day it wasn't even Guiness for me. A local Washington brewery by the name of Iron Horse has a brew they call Irish Death that soundly defeats Guinness for my taste buds. I was quite happy to toast to the memory of the beloved bishop's work with it.

Once I purchased the X27, I have almost never used any other tool for splitting wood.
