I'm not new to burning wood but i'm new to wood boilers. My brother in law is building a new house and is giving me his Legend Boiler. I believe it's 300 gallons, 135000 BTU and seems to be in fine working order. I have a bunch of questions.

I have a 2000 square foot home, including basement probably around 3000 square, LP forced hot air and central air. I live in North East PA so are winters can range from mild to bitter. I'm going to have the boiler about 100 feet from the house.

Does anyone have any experience with Legend boilers? I've started looking into insulated underground pex but any words of wisdom would help. How about heat exchangers? Can the AC and Boiler exchangers be touching? the furnace sits on the floor, the AC is directly on top of that and i'm hoping to put the boiler exchanger on top of that. Is that possible/advisable?

Are you fully prepared to keep it supplied with the required amount of decent wood?

I'm not familiar with Legend but I would be leery of any used OWB - just generally speaking. Did it have regular water testing & treatment? Return temp protection? Operated properly?

I burn about 5 cords per winter right now.

I know he added something to the water i'm not sure what. What is return temp protection? And i think is was used properly.

What are the issues that i would run into if it wasn't operated properly? As of now it's been drained. Are there any tests i can do or things i should look for?
