Need some opinions, buying 5 tons, 5 brands

I have been burning pellets for 2 years now after burning wood for years.

My first year I burned New Englands as that was the only brand the store I bought my stove from carried, and I received 2 tons free. It was a very mild winter, I burned 2 tons heating the whole house.

The second year, (last year) I burned 4 tons of Okanagan Gold. New house, same stove, not as mild of a winter.

I don't have anything negative to say about either brand, stove handled both with no issues. I feel like the Golds had more ash, but I didn't keep track, and I burned more so its all relative.

I am going to buy from squire lumber this year--their pellets are at the link below. I think this year I am going to buy 5 tons of 5 different brands. I plan to take extensive notes on ash, burn temp, outside temp etc. Can you seasoned experts help me out? I currently have the following in my cart: Vermont, Maine, LogikE, Northern Warmth (gold) and Patriot Pellet. I've read the the Northern Warmths are Okie Golds and the Patriots are rebranded Purcells with a trademark owned by Squire.

Hey, are you burning pellets this year? With the low cost of oil, I only burned a half ton last year, just to make sure the thing still worked. Probably will do the same this year.

I figure my break even for burning pellets vs oil is around $2/gallon at my delivered bulk on rice of $283/ton. This is based on my actual real work usage vs the btu calculator due to my oil being older and inefficient. Last year I burned 8.5 ton plus 200 gallons switching over to oil at the end of march. I kicked on my pellets a week ago to burn the the 1.5 ton left in my bin and have a delivery scheduled for next week to fill up. I think I will use pellets this year to support the green Mtn pellet mill since it's basically the same as the $2.10 current oil price.

have you tried the curran brand? That is basically all they sell locally. I used them last year and they seemed ok but I have literally nothing else to compare to. There was little to no dust in each bag so I know from that standpoint they were fine.

Yes I have but only bagged, not bulk. They are a pine softwood and are good. Vermont wood pellets and green Mtn are both much better in my opinion.

burned a few bags last year of NW pine[gold]..
lot's of coarse ash.. didn't go for them much.
good prices there...
and of course the Doug firs you'll have to mortgage your house for a couple tons.

I get my pellets from Squires too. They are very good about giving their opinion on pellets. I bought two tons of Turman this year, on their recommendation. I tried Vermonts last year but are too expensive for me. I liked the oakie platinum I got from them last year, but they are not getting this year. If you bought a Harman stove from them, it will burn anything you put in it. The more you spend on pellets, the less you have to clean the stove, in my opinion. I'd say the Vermonts or a Doug Fir pellet would be the cleanest.

Hopefully this year will help me narrow my selection for next year. I'm interested in the outcome of the patriots as squire is putting their name on those...

I like the soft as well, but unless my budget is in surplus (how often does that happen?), I buy the best I can with what I have to spend. I know I'll be disappointed in what I bought this year, but what can I do!

compared to the quite ashy stove chows mile away at HD for 249.00.
