ive been going back and forth between a pellet and wood insert- I think I'm doing a wood add on when I replace my furnace next year and that has me leaning toward a pellet stove in the original brick fireplace...

My co worker brought up the idea of core drilling through the back of the existing fireplace and straight out... it's a fully brick fireplace that has siding on it... other than it looking a little odd is this a bad idea? It would make it much easier to clean and I'm assuming vent much better than going up 2 stories with a flexible liner.

Not trying to hack- trying to do it logically.

It is QUITE doable..Another plus is that shorter venting
means less wear & tear on the combustion blower & you can
get horizontal caps with outside air attachments built right into them.

Curious..If the chimney has a decent draft, how is it harder on the blower?
I would have thought it would be easier.
I had to adjust the draft setting on my stove, because it was too high..
