toilet leak question

i just installed a pressure-assisted toilet. when i flush, it seems everything works well until the very end of the flush cycle where a little water squirts out between the bowl and tank.

is this just a case of needing to cinch down the bolts a little more to compress the seal? i had originally tightened them reasonably hard, but then heard a sound like stress/start of a crack, so i backed them off a bit.

Sounds like you may have chipped/cracked the tank or bowl by overtightening it. You may have to pull it apart to check. If it's just chipped, you may be able to repair. If cracked - ???

i will look tonight, but i can't imagine i cracked it since the rubber seal was still compressing and i wasn't porcelain on porcelain and still trying to tighten the bolts.

Even with the seal between them, the pressure from the bolt can crack to porcelain. If no crack, my guess is over compressed seal from over tightening, bad seal, or maybe an imperfection in the tank or bowl matting surfaces.

so should i detach, then start over and snug up the nuts 'til the tank is snug (doesn't move) and level front-to-back (relative to the bowl)?

Yup. Be sure to check for cracks as others said. And I'm sure you are aware, but just in case, it's a good idea to work back and forth between the two nuts (insert joke here!)

Are you sure its leaking between the tank & bowl, and not the water fill inlet gasket? Those leak real easy if over tightened. Regardless, Whichever is leaking, I'd replace that gasket.

it's a new toilet, so can't imagine the gaskets are shot.

Once you over tighten them they are.

what kind of assist toilet is it? i've got a gerber with a sloan power flush. no water in the tank. all water is stored in a bellows inside of a plastic tank.

i have the flushmate also. sloan makes it. if yours is anything like mine you can throw away the plunger. if something doesn't go down give it 30 seconds to refill and hit it again. i have the 1.6 gallon flush and our water pressure is 100 psi give or take 5 pounds. noisey but great toilet. ours would probably take down a bed pillow.

awesome. looks like this model is 1.0 GPF. impressed so far, though not truly tested. it's in a downstairs bathroom for guests.

sure, louder than a normal toilet, but it's far enough away that i don't care. would rather have the flushing power over the noise.
