Thought I’d share my findings so far in my first season as a pellet burner.

My main source so far has been Pro Pellet premium hardwood pellets.
I got the early bird special back in August for $219/ton. I’ve been burning them daily for about 3 weeks now in my new King 5502. Pellets are a medium brown in color and range from 1/4 inch to 1 inch long. They are consistent and seem to be of good quality. My main room temp ranges from 72-77 and bedrooms are 68-72 degrees with outside temps ranging from 17-40 degrees.

I recently tried a bag of Hamer’s Hot Ones after reading some decent reviews on them. They also range in size from 1/4 to 1 inch in length. They are a darker brown color. I have not had a good experience with these pellets. They overflowed the burn pot in my cousins St. Croix stove and seem to leave a thick, heavy ash in the burn pot. They also seem to not want to light in my garage Englander and left a nasty white residue on the glass. Unless I hear about a bad batch, I don’t think I’ll be purchasing any more of these.

I just bought a bag of Premium Wood Pellets from Tractor Supply. I read on here that they are Lignetics made and packaged for TSC. They are smaller than both the Hamers and ProPellet. Almost like pea gravel with hardly any pellets longer than 1/2 inch. They are also much lighter in color. Almost grey with an occasional dark pellet scattered throughout. Burning for the first time tonight in the Englander (my go-to test stove because of the auger and firepot style, it seems like it will burn anything!) I’ve heard that these pellets are kind of cheap, but I gotta give them a try because I read on here that a TSC in Butler is selling them for $149 a ton! I called and verified and it’s legit! They’d have to be pretty bad to not warrant saving $100 a ton.

Hamers gave me very good heat but they do leave a very coarse heavy ash...

Already into my second ton of TSC pellets. They're not the best by any means but for the price, I'll be picking up a 3rd ton soon.

I have been using Hamers Hot Ones for the last few seasons, and they have been decent. But this year's seem to be dodgy. When running my Kozi at 3, very swiftly get a clinker bed - and haven't found the right air setting yet. The ash is much coarser and darker than previous year's. This is troublesome with the recent cold snaps.

same here when i burned the Hamers....

After fighting with the blessed things and incessantly cleaning out clinker beds - sometimes forming in less than 12 hours - even with the air set at full blow. Test burned a bag of Stove Chow from Home Depot. Burned down perfectly fine. Test of a mix burned a LOT more ashy but didn't clog the burn part. Definitely the fuel.

Looks like a bad year for Hamers. A lot of unhappy burners over at Wood Pellet Reviews.
