Going back to wood...

HehHeh . . . I was thinking of another guy who used to hang out here who was a huge Woodstock fan . . . and a fan of vertical splitting which I never could get used to doing.

I know you’re talking about Dennis, it’s too bad new folks here don’t get the pleasure of knowing him or his helpful advice. He rescued me my first season with a cord of truly seasoned wood when I came up short.

When I started posting here, he was one of the first to welcome me, and you know what he said early on? Sure you do.."Get your wood dry, son!" He got me 'fired up' about dry wood, I committed to getting ahead on my wood stash, and I've never looked back.

My parents have a Progress Hybrid because they needed rear vent and wanted to.upgrade to a more efficient stove. It's beautiful and they like it. Glass is huge and stays clean. Love the side load and the grated bottom. (my stove has a plug which I do not prefer). Their house is 2300square feet, leaky farm house, and they can't keep it heated on our coldest nights (single digits) even in our climate (MD). Hope that helps you. If I were you, I'd scale up on the size of the stove. Just being able to put longer wood in would have me sold! I'm jealous of the length splits he puts in that thing!

This year I have had to fall back on the oil to supplement the IS. I know the rest of the country has it much colder than us, but houses in this area aren't required to be insulated like ones in the northern zones and that stretch of close to 0 overnight lows with a stiff northern breeze put a hurting on our wood stacks

We made the trip to Woodstock’s showroom and factory today and talked to Penny. She was very nice, and very knowledgeable.
There’s no doubt the PH is way too much for our space, and the IS was counted out immediately for aesthetic reasons. The Fireview is definitely the right stove for us, and the wife likes it in blue the best. I took along several pictures of our hearth and chimney with measurements, and she said we meet code with no issues.
We got to walk around in the factory and look at them in various stages of assembly which was really nice. There was no production today so the place was quiet.
I told her I didn’t need the stove until late summer and I would come pick it up, so she took my information and said I’d be notified when their sale of the year happens, late spring/early summer. That’s when the best discount is available so that’s when I’ll buy. It was worth a 6 hour drive, round trip.
Thanks again to everyone who commented, I really appreciate everyone’s advice. I’ll be sure and post some pictures after it’s up and running.
