what brand and model of gar door opener y'all recommend ?

its been years since we bought new units....course I like the old style best. less crap went wrong. I think our craftsman 2 units we put in back in the late seventy,s still working in our former home of many years
WE bought I believe a new bd inside that all the maintenance needed...for the opener itself.

Purgatory home already installed on both bi door.
Now in this home when Hubby had the garage built years ago he was to cheap to install one plus back then it was just a weekend home,
well anyway he said Gary Sullivan radio show talked about a unit not with chain drive prob "screw drive"
he said. Gary Sullivan said it was smooth as butter. something about unit mounting on the side I guess he means side of the door. I can't picture it.
want a good unit no builders grade crap,,, We may install it ourselves since most labor is a rip off, and we are no dummies... definitely no "SMART "crap either.. Only one benefits is NOT the "dumb" owner. course if I had my way wouldn't have an overhead door anyway. more crap to go wrong. we definitely always use our garages.... May have too much "stuff" but at least I could always park in my garages.
I know Im opinionated and all. ...but just can't understand why people park outside and store junk in their nice garages....and we have older vehicles. ha ha

Come on y'all Guys anyone definitely no SMART CRAP......I bet new ones will not outlast old ones. we had Sars best for years many years before it needed the circuit board replace

The newer ones that you describe mount on the end of the torsion spring rod, that runs above the door. Of course, if your door still has the old style extension springs, then this is not the best option for you.

No advice on brands or models, myself. Been many years since I’ve bought one.

I installed two of the Chamberlain ones they sell at Lowes 3 years ago. Haven't had any problems with them. They do have remotes but theres not much else SMART about them. They are chain driven and pretty quiet.

I'd try to stay away from Overhead Door. Not a quality issue, but you HAVE to use their $$ remotes. Generics won't work.

I ran into another wrinkle programming remotes. When I got done with the last remote the first remote didn't work anymore. Finally figured out I could only program 2-3 remotes per door. It became a funny story a few months later...

We still using the original vemco units from '56. We had a garage guy come in and "tune them up" when we moved in 8 yes ago. They always work, no problems, have that cool hammer steel look. They even work with modern car openers.

Not very secure, tho. Keep the door between garage and house locked, if you’re counting on 60 year old Vemcos with no encoding on the remotes.

That door is just a slider. If anyone wanted to rob us they could just walk in the door, we never lock it, in fact we lost the key.
