I am thinking about installing a pellet stove in my living room to further help reduce my oil consumption. A local pellet supplier is selling tons of fuel for $279-$339 plus delivery. With oil at $2.24 a gallon delivered, I'm having a difficult time justifying laying out more for pellets than for oil. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your input

Like anything... Shop around. I have 2 dealers near me that sell the same pellets. 1 charges $230/ton another charges $250/ton. So prices, grade, and results do vary.

On my 40# bag of pellets it states one bag of pellets replaces 2.5 gal of oil. Don't know how true the statement is but it sounds good.

Just a heads up to anyone near Brochet or Thompson, Manitoba. There is currently a group of auctions from the Government of Canada (GCSurplus dot ca) for trailer-loads full of wood pellets, literally. One trailer has 1400x 40 pound bags, others have different amounts. There are about 7 auctions. Not any use to anyone not near there, but it is an opportunity for someone close. I am guessing they will all go to whoever bids on them. In total, there is probably over 5000 bags.

one 40 lb bag of pellets is NOT equal to one gal fuel oil. more lke 2 gallons or more.

we have a harman 61k btu unit..
although pellet stoves are concidered big space heaters,
the fact that you can have your distribution blower on 24/7 makes a world of difference compared to baseboard or forced air whereas it is heat/cool down/heat/ rinse lather repeat...
haven't used our oil furnace other than for hot water now for 5 years...heat 24/7 with the pellets...
went thru 2/half tons so far this winter at 250.00 ton.. keeping the stove around 74 degrees, our oil furnace would drink oil$$$$$ like a drunken sailor if we kept the thermostat that high..

I used to fly (Navajo) up the Brochet and Lac Brochet. The ice road is the only way in or out if you are hauling more than people so it would be an expensive endeavor to recover these pellets...I checked the site and the 40ft trailers are included but they are garbage..
I also noted a fellow in Gimli is selling the same name brand pellets at $4.50 Cdn a bag (by the ton though) and the pic on kijiji was a screen cap of the GC Canada site so I assume he is the guy that bought them. At $4.50 its still not enough of a "deal" to drive from Kenora to get em...
as a side note HD was clearing them out last week at 4.50 bag (I bought all their stock) ...

I think that would depend on the square footage being heated and the outside temp of the winter your dealing with.If it's cold outside your gonna use everything at your disposal to heat you living area. At that particular point if it's 10 deg.outside and my home is colder than I would like, I'm going to get my wallet out and eat it anyway.

Its all relative as to what you want for the temperature at. My wife was complaining the other day that it was freezing in the house. The house was at 71 downstairs and 69 upstairs. If we were going to use propane to heat the house, we would have it set to 70. We burn pellets which is almost half of what would cost in propane but the downstairs is usually 78 and upstairs 73.
