NEWBIE NEEDS HELP

Hello all.. I have a bit of experience burning wood and i am by no means an expert. I bought this big house with 2 wood burning fireplaces. One in basement and the other on mainfloor. Im told this is a heatlator. I want to remove the fireplace and I'm not sure if the brick has to be removed. Does anyone have an idea of how this comes out? thanks so much in advance!

What is the point of the box on top of the actual firebox?

You will probably have to either pull off the brick or cut it into peices from inside to take it out through the hole. What are you wanting to do once you get it out?

I want to install a new wood burning insert. Im being told I will have to rework the brickwork on the opening above the firebox

Ok problem is you probably dont have a fireplace to put an insert in. What type of flue is above that fireplace is it metal or clay?

An insert goes into a masonry fireplace. Did you mean you want to replace this old ZC fireplace with a modern EPA ZC fireplace?

It may be but most prefab fireplaces like yours are in a framed structure with a metal chimney. Some are then faced in brick and can be deceiving. That is why i asked if you had clay liners or metal above that unit.

What does it look like on the outside? Is the chimney metal or masonry?

its is most defintely a masonary fireplace. it has two clay liners. one for the basement round) and one for the main floor which is rectangular.

It may be some type of heat form fireplace. The best thing to do is get a certified WETT sweep out to inspect and let you know what your options are. It may be able to take an insert with a stainless liner up the flue.
