Bought 10 bags in the fall to try them and they seemed to burn nicely in my Quadrafire Castile. Went and got 2 tons delivered and am getting huge clinkers that look like chunks of lava and a lot of heavy ash in the burn pot. I have to empty the burn pot 3 times a day to keep it burning properly. Other than the clinkers and the ash build up they burn hot with a vigorous bright flame. Is there anything I can do to help cut down on the clinkers?

Last year I used EasyBlaze premium and they burned very well with hardly any ash buildup in the burn pot. The dealer I got them from was having a hard time getting the EasyBlaze this winter so I switched to Energex.

3 x a day!!?? Yikes I can't imagine... Are you burning on low all the time?

I would think the same thing myself...too low of a burn but,
he burned EZBblaze premiums with no problem. I burn those exclusive......
Energex can be a crapload of ash which is why i stopped using them 4 yrs ago.
never got the big lava chunks but then again, 4-5 yrs ago..formulas/raw materials change a lot.

Burning on medium setting. I don't get tons of ash on the deck around the burnpot, it all seems to stay in the burnpot. With other brands that I used in the past like EasyBlaze, Turman, Hamers HotOnes, the ash was fluffy and blew out of the burn pot during the burn cycle. With those brands I cleaned the burnpot maybe once every day or two. Never any clinkers with those brands. I think that's the problem with Energex, the ash is dense and heavy and doesn't blow out of the pot, it stays in and gets so hot then turns into hard chunks. I guess there is not a lot I can do to prevent this. Just live with it and try to get EasyBlaze next year.

A dealer I have used in the past in Quakertown,Pa having hard time getting the EZBlaze also...
Don't know what to tell you about the clinkers..maybe too much mineral content in the pellets which doesn't help you either way....just curious.... what is the feed rate you use..?

That's why I didn't get EasyBlaze this year. Some sort of supply problem, they couldn't get them in large quantities for delivery. Went with another dealer that only had Energex. I use a wide open feed. It was set like that since I had it installed 13 years ago. It always burned nice so I never messed with it. Do you think cutting the pellet feed down some would help?

actually, lowering the feed rate will cause more problems than raising it in most stoves. though not familiar with your stove...
but, give it a shot for half a day or so and see what happens... really sounds like there is a lot of mineral content in those pellets.
btw: have you scraped the burnpot good with no speedbumps blocking the ash?

I keep the burnpot clean all the time. I have pokers chisels that I use to scrape the carbon off and keep all the air holes open.

It may be a different batch of pellets that I got when I bought the 2 tons. Got them from a different dealer than the 10 bags I tested earlier.
