I'm redoing a half bath and an esteemed elder suggested we look for a taller toilet as it's easier to get on and off of. It's a new idea, but I dont want to redo this in the future so I'm open to the idea. Are there any designs that are close to your heart? Any that aren't?

We have a new Toto Drake toilet that is taller. I wouldn't say it's close to my heart, closer to my farts would be more like it. I can still get up easily enough from our regular height toilet so far. Can't say whether I would do it again. Give me another 5-10 yrs. As a toilet I am not that excited about it. This model does a poor job of cleaning the bowl during the flush. It looks like Toto got the word and now have addressed this but I can't say how well.

I picked up a kohler at lowes that was higher than the old one with the larger bowl. The height became a non issue after a day or two. I definitely am not impressed with cleaning ability associated with the low volume flush units. I dont think its specfic to Kohler as I run into similar issues when I stay at hotels.

On the TMI side a high fiber diet isnt that compatible with low flush toilets. I think the standard test for flushing ability is hot dogs versus oatmeal ;). The low flush toilets do seem to pass solid objects quite well but softer waste tends not to flush as well from the non wetted surfaces of the bowl.

Personally I don't have any designs close to my heart but I've replaced a few old toilets with the taller ones. I'll never go back to having a short toilet.

Sounds like the toilets the US Military put in Afghanistan for soldiers. Like a porcelain RV toilet.

On topic, definitely get the high toilet and that way you can use a foot stool. I know it sounds weird, but putting your feet into a position that mimics a squat while sitting on the toilet will make your life much better. You won't even need any reading material! If I could have my way our toilet would be a European squat toilet and a bidet, but I'm kind of weird. It sounds funny, uncomfortable, and unconventional, but really the chair shaped toilets we have now are the unconventional idea.

Last time we did the Bathroom we went to a taller toilet
sure saves on my poor old knees easy to sit on easy to stand up.

BTW there is also a design trend of raising the sink/vanity height. The older designs always assumed kids in the house so everything was a compromise. The other adult design trend is no bathtubs, just low threshold showers.

I do a lot of bathrooms and the best one iov found is the (Niagra) From Home depot. About $150. I tried it cuz it has the lowest water use available around here, but its top notch in every way. On the tall side,Pressurized flush, very good cleaning and only .8 ga. per flush. Our other water saver is a dual flush and its 1.6 and 1.2 so even on the miniflush it uses more water.

I can replace a toilet in an hour or two, and they’re not exactly a major investment, so I don’t need to plan for eventual old age in my choice of toilet today. How old are you?

The one thing I really appreciate is the toilet. I can remember going months without seeing one.

I was going to draw footprints beside the waste pipe in the new basement, but thought I was the only one who would see the humor in it. So, even though I do not have running water yet, I put in a tall toilet. A garden hose and a large barrel supply the water.

If you are going to put one in, you might as well put a tall one in.

I'm 43 as of today. I don't have any pressing issues, except lack of hours in a day.

So here's the story and why I'm looking for stuff in the future.

The bathroom is in the cabin. When my Grandfather put the bathroom I. He snugged it up against the framing. Who wouldn't want more bathroom room? When I took over the place I wanted it a bit more finished than open studs. I was able to literally squeeze a 1/4" piece of breadboard in there behind it.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and the wife is complaining that the $30 flusher that Grandpa installed 20 years ago isn't flushing well anymore. So, if I'm going to replace it, I may as well move it out away from the wall. If I move it, I may as well gut it and insulate it. It's only a 5x7 room and the only furniture is the throne and sink. So, here I am. I gutted around everything. 2" foam board installed in the cabin walls and drywall/Luan along the top 4 ft, wood will go along the bottom. Vanity the wife chose should be delivered this week. She's not finding any lights she likes so I'll paint the old one day glow Orange and reinstall it for motivation.

And then we have the toilet. It'll only take an hour to install, but has caused me a bunch of work. I don't want to perform any more maintenance than I have to. Which ideally is winterizing it.

Good for you guys.
Regarding the pop up ads. Just below the text in your reply there was a pop up ad for Progressive. Flo was featured with a big smile. At first glance I thought you had posted a pic.

add a Toto WASHLET. with attached controls. No remotes for me too easy to lose etc The C100 models older ones so far work fine for yrs. Unfortunately Toto won't sell replacement parts... and you never go back Just a saying. Thanks all

My tenant had one of those. Perennially late on rent, had a thousand dollar toilet seat. Go figure. Then it sprung a leak. What a nightmare.

$399 toilet seat. don't get remote control ones. Had the first one for over 10 yrs. Hubby can't wait to get back to his Toto after visiting a relative. best investment ever

A toilet seat was the best investment you ever made? Oh Jean, we need to talk!

I'm not that tall (5'6") and I find the taller toilets are a touch too tall for me. I like having my feet firmly planted on the ground when I'm taking care of business. :)

I'm also pretty fit, so getting up from the traditional (shorter) fixtures isn't a challenge for me...

Stop in at your local HD or Lowes and try out the fixtures!

I don't think they've made an episode of Mr. Bean in almost 20 years, but I could see this as having been a good episode premise.

While browsing the plumbing department at a big box store when my sons were about 4 and 5 I turned around just in time to catch their intended use of a toilet that was on display at floor level. They were locked and loaded, pants at their ankles (they do that at that age) when my yell stopped them. I was laughing way too hard to get mad. :)
