If you could "test drive" 3 different stoves, what would they be and why?

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
For the past 9 years, state and Federal regulators push European "clean burning" heaters to the forefront during meetings.

Several US labs have tested many of the "clean burning" European stoves and very, very few pass.

What happened? Their test method was and still is vastly different than those we use. So the methods we use, both Method 28R and ASTM 3053 are complex and prove a single fact.

Manufacturers design stoves to pass tests. Simple, truthful.

With a German mom and having lived in Germany for many years..

+1 on the Kochelofen!

1. Blazeking Chinook 30 I want to try a cat stove in our house, since I went out to buy one when we were looking and we bought a modern looking tube stove.

2. PE Summit Would like to see how well the EBT2 works.

3. Walltherm Vajolet. I really like the idea of of woodstove/boiler for water heating, heat storage, and heating remote portions of the house and garage with hot water.

1. Blaze King Ashford. Looks about the same size as my Quad, but I'd love to see how the burn times and evenness of heat compares
2. Pacific Energy T5 ceramic. Looks really sharp, hopefully it works as nice as it looks.
3. US Stove 1261. See if I can save on light bulbs if I get it really hot.

Bonus item: VC Defiant. Looks stunning during the summer time with whore house red enamel on it.

Red! Winter, Christmas, warm fire.... red is how I used to think an enamel stove should look. My wife's decoration sense squashed that color idea early in the stove search. I do see, however, that PE has started offering the T5 Classic enamel in "sunset red". I wonder how it'll sell?

One of the first Summits that showed up on Hearth.com was roospike's whorehouse red stove. It was a sharp-looking stove in spite of good-natured comments from the peanut gallery.

One of them Hitzer coal jammies talked about in the locked down thread
A Outdoor boiler of some name brand
A Woodstock hybrid so I can tell the guy from IN that hangs out in the BK thread, that the BK is superior. ;lol

I'm completely satisfied with my Blaze King King Ultra it works perfect for my situation, I can’t think of any other stove I’d want to try.

The "sunset red" they show for the T5 looks more red than the Summit "sunset red," which is more maroon. I'm assuming it's the same color though, and I bet it sells well.

He said test-drive, he didn't say you'd have to switch. :) Wouldn't you like to run a different stove, just to see what the differences might be? What other stoves have you run besides the King?

over the years I’ve had a Lennox Fire view, a PE vista, numerous old fishers, timberline, several wood furnaces, and a pellet stove. I have a small area 1000 square feet cabin, and large king ultra. It allows us to be toasty warm when very cold or in milder weather still have a fire and not be roasted out. if not too cold we can leave and Come back in 50 or 60 hours and still have coals and warm cabin. I do t know of another stove that would do that for me.

I’m always test drivin!
If I had to choose something different, I’m not sure what direction I’d go?
I’d love to run a Woodstock PH at some point, it’s just too expensive! Although I really liked my FV, I’m not really crazy about soapstone.

King has a jumbo box, that's for sure.

When I was shopping my top choices were:
Morso 2b classic
Jotul F118 Black Bear
Vermont Castings Intrepid

So I would love to have the Jotul and VC in my house to compare for a season on each stove. I really like the look and enamel on the VC, but the reliability rating is bad, like Land Rover/Jaguar bad. Unfortunately the Jotul also has a bad rap and it would have stuck out into the room farther than the Morso or VC.

  1. Blaze King: I keep hearing such fantastic things about them.
Wittus - Twinfire Stove: Probably beyond my budget, and probably not practical for 24/ 7 burning, nevertheless intrigued with their design - secondary burn box below (bottom box).

My choices would be:

1). Blaze King-either a King or a Princess. Would love to see how those over 24 hr burns would fit my schedule, as well as seeing how it burns some of the less desirable wood in my piles (pine, etc).

2). Englander 30-NC. This is the stove I almost bought because I loved the ease of use, firebox size, user reviews and burn time for a non catalytic stove. Ended up going with the ideal steel because my wife liked the colors and the artwork you can get on it. And as it turns out its just as easy to use and operate as the 30-NC would have been.

3). Qudra Fire Isle Royale. This is the stove I saw years ago that made me want a wood stove in my house no matter where I lived. The enamel was just beautiful (especially that greenish color), large firebox, great burn times, top loading, super easy to use, and great reviews. They did everything right with that one and its a shame it went out of production. I saw one on Craigslist near Madison years ago and it sucks I didn't have any way to get it as we were living in a condo at the time.

All of my choices, as well as my current stove are leagues above the VC Resolute Acclaim I suffered through for a few years. Not my choice, came with a previous house I lived in and boy was that thing awful to run <>

I would like to test a WS Ideal Steel for sure and may yet..

Any catalytic coal stove
I don't think any exist. I have a feeling the cat wouldn't last long. Plus no one is putting much r&d money into coal. It is just such a small market as the price of coal just keeps going up

Hitzler makes some great coal stoves without a doubt. If I ever decided to go back to coal. Which is doubtful it would be a hitzler

I get to use lots of different stoves. I am always on the lookout for a good deal on my next stove. I would like to try the regency 5100 or 5200 they are the same.

The progress hybrid.

I was always curious about pe stoves but I will get to play with one at my dad's now.

I will try out anything that is the right size for my house and the right price.

Well, hate to break it to you all, there is an EPA approved coal/wood combo from my friends at WSS!

EPA funded R&D work with WSS and another manufacturer. They needed a product for the Navajo Nation/Four Corners change out program.

Yes...it's catalytic. The trick is to not let sulfur poison the cat. Burning some wood and coal both seems to be an art.

Incidentally, the coal IS NOT ANTHRACITE! It's bituminous coal (like dirt). Anthracite gets too hot.

It is actually designed for sub bituminous coal I believe. Do they run the coal through the cat? I did know about that stove but kind of assumed you pulled the cat for coal. But I could be completely wrong there. Do you know?

This is interesting.

Dirt is dirt.

What's the stove called? I tried to google WSS stove but couldn't find anything
