Recommendations please for Ontario install

I wouldn't take a CB if you gave it to me.Lots of bad stories around here,plus the dealer is a d1ck head

CB really stepped in it when they decided to step away from backing up their lifetime warranty on the cracking/warping doors...I know a few different people that said they are done with CB, despite having a good local dealer.

I did. I can't get it in my basement and the city won't let me build infrastructure for a shed without permits.

I've heard similar and did my homework before committing. We have a CB tech in the area that is really good with support with these newer units. I liked HeatMaster as a company but I had concerns regarding their local supplier. Plus HeatMaster's newer units (ie. G4000/G7000) came in with really poor 3rd party testing. I heard these tests can be inconsistent but avg efficiency of 70% vs 83% is a big deal from my perspective. Hopefully CB has turned a corner. Their warranty is more similar to HM now, their technology appears better, controls/monitoring is top notch. I need five years of reliable service and plan on swapping a more efficient IWB w storage unit at that point in an exterior solarium anyways. I'll be back to share my experiences just the same!

For solar thermal, would you go with vacuum tubes or flat panels?

sb99 Good luck with the project and moving forward. I can't comment on CB units but I sure have read some not so nice stuff about them. I know I not the happiest with my Garn needing to spend a bunch of money in year nine to repair a major crack. They like to blow off how long there units run. I have treated it with kid gloves. It been a little over a year since the repair and every thing has been fine. Back when I put mine in in 2009 there was some energy tax money and that helped ease the pain of the cost of the Garn. One of the main things of being happy with a wood fired boilers is nice dry hard wood to burn. Put your wood up early so it has time dry and that will make a ton of difference on how much wood you will use.

Thanks! Appreciate the well wishes. I am cutting mostly dead ash off the property. 13% moisture content on the ends and 17% on the fresh splits. We moved here last November so doing my best to get ahead of it. Thinking about ordering a tandem load as a buffer for next year. I've been told to expect burning 12 small cords with a CB HDX for my immediate end use (3000ft2 with DHW). I don't buy it. I am guessing closer to 20. Time will tell. Hope the fix gives you another 10 years!

Small cords? What is that? A cord is a cord - 8'x4'x4'. I would prepare for burning 12 of those a year with a conventional OWB. Not sure how good or bad yours will end up being.

I mean short cords (8x4x16") we call them face cords but there are regional differences

That would translate then to 4 cords. Which I would not expect to get any or much more than half way through a winter with, using an OWB.

A cord of wood is 4ft by 4ft by 8 ft there is no such thing as a small cord My gasifyer uses 8 cords a winter in the cold north to heat my house and remote boiler building

I put a Garn Jr. in my shop in 2015 To replace an Empyre 100. They are supposed to be the Cadillac of boilers but we all know what happend to Cadillac. I like the boiler out in the shop, not in the house. I probably burn 5 cord during the season. I have a propane high efficient boiler for backup when I go away, I don’t like it backfeeding to the boiler but what are you going to do.
