Auber install question

Getting ready to install my auber and from reading the forum and search I know best is 18" above stove top. I have straight up double wall pipe. I can go 15" up before the slip joint comes into play. Would I be better installing 15"up and just going through one dw pipe or go ahead and go up 18" and go through all four layers of pipe?
 
The instrumentation does not care how many layers you go through. It will read the gasses at whatever height you choose. Things will be a hotter as you approach the stove and cooler as you move away but who chose the standard18-20”? I think you will get good usable information at 15” but I’ve put in probe meters through 4 layers. It’s no big deal so I would probably do that.

If you do drill through all four. Drill a clean hole and avoid pushing the bit. You don’t want a piece of shrapnel hanging out that will scratch the lower/smaller pipe every time you collapse the telescoping section.

I know it doesn't care, I was just wondering about the difference between 15" & 18". Also not wanting to go through both sections of pipe unless it was beneficial. I want good results but would prefer the single section unless it really made a difference.

I wondered about that. These k type thermocouples, do they do all of the sensing at the tip? In single wall pipe, the probe tip is well past center of the pipe.

That's my understanding...I try to keep mine more or less in the center of the pipe.

The probe attachment bracket on these auber probes doesn’t make depth adjustments easy. I can fab something up but there’s no compression lock collar like on a pyrometer for a truck exhaust manifold.

What model do you have?
I'm not using an Auber...my thermocouple is ~1/4" x 6"...I just drilled a hole in the pipe of the proper diameter so that when I slide the TC in it stays where I put it...no need to "attach it".
If your TC is a weird size and you don't have a drill bit the right size to pull this off, just drill the closest that you have so that it is still just a bit too small...then you can take a tapered punch and tap/twist it in to stretch the hole to the exact size needed...

Too late. It’s in. Followed the directions and drilled the 1/8” hole which is pretty exact but loose enough that it slides out from the weight of the wire. I’ll build a spacer of some sort, thinking plumbers tape.

So the probe is more than 3" long?

Yes, it’s four inches past the flange and intended for double wall pipe. So, one inch spacer is needed. How about a little chunk of copper? FED5A70B-ABCC-41AA-B6EC-4AE0EEAB59DC.jpeg
 
Can you tell us what readings you are seeing during a burn cycle vs stove top.
 
Depends on what your air settings are...that can change pipe temps quite a lot, and pretty quick.

I run internal flue temps around 700 when the stove top is around 600. This is with my key damper half way closed after the initial bloom.

I removed that copper spacer. I found that the one inch required to perfectly center the tip really makes no difference and it looked hokey.

Huh...that surprises me, mine is very sensitive to that...and others have found the same also...but, we are not running the Auber brand though either so...

And it’s an all vertical flue, not sure if yours are horizontal. Very easy to verify it makes zero difference.

Now I see your problem. That horizontal pipe will certainly see more heat and flow on the top compared to the more laminar flow of a vertical stack.

I propose that your hottest gasses are somewhere near the top of the horizontal pipe and that locating that probe tip is not a trivial thing.

Nope...near the middle...slightly biased to the upper middle actually

Can you tell us why you chose the auber flue pipe temp vs stove top? Do you have a damper. Just curious.

I have a stove top gauge. It works well but I wanted to also monitor the flue temps. Especially on cold starts where it takes time for the stove top to come up to temp. No damper, using a Lopi Endeavor.
 
Im going to try to monitor the flue (single wall) with a screw on Auber thermostat and use the magnet Auber version (the combo) to watch the stove top. I am assuming I will just have to cycle between the two to see both or use a camera, but not sure if you can have two Auber units yet. I couldn't get a clear answer from Auber, but the manual says you can monitor 2 -10 units. Ill know next week.

I have two Auber units at210a. but only one remote a210-b. I bought a combo and then later bought another a210a.

I have the remote in bedroom for stove top and the other two units in front of the stove about 5 feet away and on a small rolling cart with wires going above and over.... and a nest indoor camera facing the stove. I can see inside the glass and see both readings all in one view...I also have the google hub next to bed....All for a safe goodnight sleep. I am using one magnet on stove and one on the stove pipe.

You will need to unplug your unit when first installed. so they sync up...and make a setting change for the second a210a unit id...

i cannot flip through and read each one i think you need to change a setting each time (pain). but since I have the camera it wouldn't play with the buttons anyway. I never got a clear answer from them so I bough the second unit. The instructions say you can, but also say only one remote. They did say they are working on new products.
