Non Electric fan for Fireplace duct

Hey Everyone,

New to the forums and sorry if this has been discussed before, I did search and have found nothing helpful. I am looking for a fan that I can mount into the fireplace ducts, on the tops vents, on each side of the fire place. I am hoping to find a product that operates similar to the fans you set on top of a woodstove that run off heat and not electricity. Does any one know if there is a product out there or has some recommendation to help move heat better. Looking for something quite as the fireplace is in our media room. Thanks in advance!

I doubt there is enough heat in that area to run one of those fans

I think one needs about 185 F to run one of those standard thermoelectric elements used for a fan.
I agree with bhollers that that's unlikely to be possible there.

I think you both are correct. I researched what those fans need heat wise to operate it and the lowest I saw was 185. I had a meat thermometer in the vent all day and the highest it got was 175.

Fireplaces just are not that efficient (negative 10% to positive 20% are numbers I have seen). I doubt a fireplace grate adds any efficiency. Try adding wood in a criss- cross next time with the last log in kinda the same position as the grate would hold it. Does it feel warmer.

I saw all the smoke in the video and cringed a little. Smoke is waisted fuel. 140$ buys a lot more heat than that grate would ever create.

Just my thoughts.

I think your right. I should probably look at getting an inset, but most likely won’t happen this year. We just moved into the house and have a 4 month old. I thinking I am going to try and find some small electric fans for the lower duct vent to help circulate air out the heated top vents.

Looks like it puts an air gap in the wood so it burns faster.

With the current tax incentive keep an eye out for decent used inserts or stoves. New house new baby means lots of firsts. The enjoyment of some wain others don’t. I Just did a Drolet 1800i trio insert from Costco, cheapest one I could find and I installed with an with insulated liner for 2000$

Did you have the chimney inspected by a chimney pro? Do you have a CO detector? How about a dry place to store firewood? As for fans I think it depends a bit where the intakes are as to what kind and design you choose. Bigger fans /blowers running at on low that put out the same amount of air as a small one on hi but it can be quieter.
