Blaze king Ashford 30.2 smoke smell problem

Holy smokes this tells me at least three things.
1) This is a good reason to use huge rope gaskets like the 3/4" or whatever BK uses.
2) It's very important to bed the gasket into wet RTV by putting the door on the stove and closing it to absorb some of this slop.
3) I'm not going to mention #3 but we're all thinking it.

hi I've got a 19' chimney . straight up with a wind rain cap. are you saying certain models you have seen don't have this isssue?thanks

Your chimney sounds perfect. I would expect the ashford to perform well with that. The 30 box stoves are available as the sirrocco, ashford, and chinook. The huge majority of smoke smell complaints on this forum seem to be from the ashford variant.
The princess/king are a much older design and never had as much trouble with this issue. They also need a chimney that meets the manual specs but the usual issue we see on a substandard chimney is smoke rollout when you open the door.
People often come to this site to solve problems so we ware going to see an overweight sample of problematic stoves. That said, I wish this could be resolved by BK as the ashford stoves perform very well and look nice.
Agreed. I almost bought one when I saw a prototype in blue-black enamel at HPBA. Reminds me of the problems reported on the large Englander 15-SSW02 door. Thick gaskets are not a good way to cover for manufacturing and/or assembly error.

Did you check for vacuum leaks in your stove pipe with a stick of incense? If you are loosing draft there, there will be less negative pressure in your firebox and it can let stank escape instead of the draft taking care of it as it should.
Hi all. Just a quick update. A month after installing the new gasket I was having the smoke smell issues again. The door clearly does not line up properly. I cannot get the top handle side tight enough. My last ditch effort was to install a draft inducer fan to create a constant negative pressure in the stove. This has solved the smell issue.
The bad: stove always runs around the 3/4 temp mark even if it is turned all the way down (not sure where is is getting the air from), constant sound of the fan running is a little annoying, much shorter burn times (12ish hours), I have to open a window at times because it gets too hot in the house

The air is coming thru the hole in the flapper that is regulated by the thermostat. The presence of the hole means it never completely closed (to assure a minimum burn rate). The fan increases the airflow thru that hole, and thus the burn rate.

Are you trying to read the catalyst temperature gauge to determine stove output? That's not what it's for. The cat gauge is to determine when to close the bypass. After that it's not useful which is why your owner's manual does not direct you to use this information for anything.
Interesting that a draft inducer solved the smell issue though. Perhaps the other air leak is wherever the stank was leaking out since it is now sucking in. Look at the bright side, 12 hours is a long burn time for most sub 3 CF stoves. The performance you get now is still good.
Maybe, but I can clearly see/smell where the smoke is leaking from the door when the fan isn’t on.

Hello @BKVP - I am in canada.
I finally replaced the gasket and used door shims and play doh to make sure it is perfectly centered and even.
When I got the stove from the dealer here, the gasket was not symmetrical - I thought it was the same issue.
However - after spending the time to get it perfect ( and it is, its a nice seal all the way around proven by a paper test. )
I still have the smoke smell issue - honestly I think its coming from the temperature probe not the gasket.
I am a little bit frustrated as I burn clean, dry, well seasoned wood, I have GREAT draft and a straight chimney, no smoke spills into the room when I open the door.
My burn times are fine, they go 12 hours on a full load - but if I turn the gauge down below half way unless its COLD OUT I get the smoke smell. ( the gauge ranges from 12-6 )
Any advice for me at this point - does your company stand by the stove? I kind of feel like I want to trade it out at the point and I am frustrated.
