Hi all- newbie here so go easy.. just bought a home in Rutland Town, VT that has a gas stove and I want to get rid of it and burn wood. I'm strongly considering a Defiant (mostly because the dealer that I'm working with has 3 of them in stock and they are full service (we're gonna need a different flue pipe)). Is this a good/bad move? I've read alot about poor customer service from VC, but I've also heard they've cleaned that up. Second choice is a Jotul F-500 Oslo but it will be a bit more difficult to get it to the house and install it (not sure if it's worth it). We don't have a short flue pipe issue so the Jotul would probably work pretty well.

Neither would be my choice. I’d be looking at a Pacific Energy T series (pick one that fits your heating needs). If you are wanting the tax credit it may be different, maybe a Woodstock or Blaze King.

I bought a new VC Defiant in fall 2021, I like it but the CAT disintigrated twice in one season. I do burn CONSTANTLY but I know what I am doing. Waiting on a Third cat and parts from Dealer to fix. Works great without cat but can't get answers as to what is wrong. Super easy to clean, load, looks beautiful. Can't give more encouragement than that, Would be happy to discuss in detail my woes, more of a talker than typer but don't know the phonecall protocal on these sites. Look for a Piano Tuner in Iowa From West Music, and I can answer all your VC questions with my complaints. Or just email me for a phone number.

Good Choice, my fellow woodcutter friend loves his Jotul. I've been advised to add another flue damper as it is quite tall in an old house. (35' relined 6" inside old brick chimney). My friend with a Jotul has exterior pipe, keep it clean and warm and you will love the stove.

For what it's worth, I ordered my stove in February and was debating between the Defiant and the F500. I ordered the Jotul.
