Finally starting to think I'm going to be able to get this done. I did end up using the legs on the front of the unit as the fireplace was not level front to back.

The key part on dressing it up will be custom fabrication of a surround. I would like to build it inside the brick so as not to cover any brick and have the unit press against it to keep it in place.

There is a metal rail across the top that will also help keep the middle plate in place.

Going to research some industrial heat resistant felt to use in a couple places to avoid any vibration noises. One of the local dealers told me I was out of my mind for trying to build this surround but I'm going to try it. Probably somewhere between a half an inch and 1 inch thick steel.

At least it looks good now. It sits much lower than my regency classic 3100 with the fans being on the side and not underneath.

1/2 inch to 1" thick steel. I doubt it. 1 inch thick steel is crazy heavy. More like 1/4" to maybe 3/8" thick. Keep posting up pics!

No doubt! Almost 41 lbs per sq ft! Not to mention expensive! No need for anything even remotely that thick...factory surrounds aren't even 1/16" thick.

Ceramic fiber insulation paper, or blanket...or rockwool.

I definitely would not go heavier than 16 ga. , even 20 ga would suffice. The fireplace opening could get an inner frame using 3/4" angle metal to provide anchorage.
