Got a suprise today

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
A work around for the heating oil issue is to look around for someone who advertises off road diesel which at least in my area comes from the same tanks. They specialize in fueling construction operations and seem to be far less picky about contracts.

You don't want to go "wood only" up there in Yankeeland, that will really get old, especially since you spent all the money for a new furnace.

In all cases a propane company will not fill a tank owned by another company. Buy your own tank! That way you can buy propane from any company, and it is much cheaper. Get a 500 gallon tank, that is what we have.

Check farmer co-ops etc. nearby since all the ag folks use red diesel for their equipment.

even with some of the co-ops it is their tank or no deal. But a couple 100 pounders are a different class just super duper gas grill tanks. When I bought this place 5+ years ago it was serviced by local Co-Op. To get service from them even though it was their tank you had to join the co op- Yearly membership fee + tank rental fee. didn't like that. went with a another co. no extra fees. likely have tank fee built into lp/gal price but the 2 of them mostly witin a couple pennies/gal. then i always pre buy in like June . which gives me a fixed maximum cost/gal for a year. if the price goes below that then i get the lower price, goes above i get the capped price up to what ever amount i prepaid. Lp furnace not used much ( set at 65 so pipes don't freeze)- wood stove does most of the work. Genny on lp runs once a week for about 30 minutes then the hot water heater , is likely what uses most. it is 31 years old should replace it- standing pilot type- 75 gal. ( those things are pricy nowdays) could down size to 50 gal. LP. Heat pump units are not in the picture- not cost effective for me.

Yeah, I have this problem with my buried 500 gal propane tank, which is only filled every 5-8 years. I just let them sign me up for their stupid contract now, to make their system and people happy, and tell them to put me down as “will call” only, no automatic delivery.

Last time this didn’t work, they still showed up for automatic delivery after a month, and could only get 8 gallons into the tank, and wanted to hit me with a delivery fee. I just re-forwarded them the email showing that I was to be “will call”, and they dropped the charges.
We do the same and it has worked very well for almost ten years.

I bought my own 500 gallon tank 3 years ago...$1100 and some change...had to drive 2 hours north to get it but I wasnt playing the contract game...spring usually finds me with 35-40% left...I just run my Woodstock propane stove on the weekends when I head south to see the grandsons..

It will be amazing how quickly a propane distribution company will fill your "not their" thank when more and more people move off of relying on these fuels to heat their homes.
BUT, dont you worry - our illustrious government will tell us wood stoves are dangerous and the leading cause of 'climate crisis', outlaw them, then regulate (TAX HEAVILY) the fossil fuels you use because...they are dirty and killing us also,.....and next thing you know you will need subsidies from said government to not die every winter using propane or electric heat (yikes). Oh and btw, you'd think you would be outraged and just vote them out and never vote them in again. Well guess what,...they will do it in such a way that if you dont get on board you just arent good little boy/girl - and should be shamed/canceled. So NO one will question and we will goosestep right to total control of how we heat our homes.
Sounds crazy doesnt it...but does it?
